Pelosi, a former House speaker, skipped talks in the morning with Italian officials, including the defense minister, as she was taken ill, the ANSA news agency reported. "After several flights yesterday in Afghanistan, and a long flight back to Italy that arrived early this morning, Leader Pelosi was not feeling well," spokesman Nadeam Elshami said in a statement released in Washington. "This morning in Rome, the ...

(Aug. 22) -- Many lottery winners choose to splash their prize money on fast cars or swanky vacations. But one anonymous Kansas Lottery player recently decided they'd spend their $10,000 winnings on a far worthier cause: funding their local hospital. Susan Concannon, executive director of the Mitchell County Regional Medical Foundation in Beloit (pop. 4,000), discovered the surprise gift when she was opening her mail late last month. "We have a PO Box that I visit every day, and hope that someone sends me some money," Susan Concannon told local TV station KAKE. "It was a very nondescript ...
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 1) -- Doctors plan to let Zsa Zsa Gabor return home Friday, about three weeks after the 93-year-old actress was hospitalized with a broken hip. Gabor's publicist, John Blanchette, said Saturday that she would spend the rest of the week receiving physical therapy. Gabor's husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, told Blanchette that the actress was joking with nurses but that she appeared depressed. He hoped the return home would restore her spirit. Blanchette says Gabor broke her hip July 17 as she was lifting herself from bed into a wheel chair that tipped over. The ...
LOS ANGELES (July 18) -- Zsa Zsa Gabor will have surgery to replace the hip she broke when she fell out of bed in her Bel Air home, her publicist said Sunday. John Blanchette said the 93-year-old actress will undergo the procedure Monday. Gabor remained in a Los Angeles hospital Sunday with her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, and other family members by her side. She was watching television in her Bel Air home when she reached to answer the phone and tumbled to the floor, according to Blanchette. "She was watching her favorite show, 'Jeopardy,' when the phone rang," he said. "She ...
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (July 13) – Two months ago, Dr. Reynold Savain was the director of the most state-of-the-art hospital in this country. Now, he walks the empty corridors of the 43,000-square-foot Centre Hospitalier du Sacre-Coeur with a stunned expression. Millions of dollars of equipment gather dust. In the driveway, tarps cover two brand-new ambulances. A colorful school of koi, still young, swim unnoticed in the rapidly dying pond in the front lobby. "Any private hospital, in any country, anywhere in the world, that sees 12,600 patients in three months -- for free -- is going ...
