Obama Won't Defend DOMA: Instant Reactions

President Barack Obama has decided that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and has ordered Attorney General Eric Holder to stop defending it in federal court. Until now, the Department of Justice has defended Section 3 of DOMA in court challenges. This section states that "the word 'marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word 'spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or wife." Two DOMA challenges are currently pending in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In a letter to Congress ...

Keith Olbermann Suspended: Instant Reactions

(Nov. 5) -- Is he now the "Worst Person in the World"? On Friday, NBC News suspended firebrand anchor Keith Olbermann after learning that he had violated the network's ethics policy by donating $2,400 each to three Democratic candidates (Jack Conway, Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords) during the midterm election cycle. "I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night," Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC, said in a statement. "Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay." As word spread of Olbermann's punishment, several ...

US Team Missing in Balloon Race Over Europe

US Team Missing in Balloon Race Over Europe

(Sept. 30) -- Maritime and air rescue teams are scouring the Adriatic Sea for two Americans who've disappeared in a hot air balloon race over Europe. The Gordon Bennett Cup race began Sept. 25 in Bristol, England, with 20 hydrogen balloons trying to see who can fly the farthest on 1,000 cubic meters of gas. They flew over the English Channel, and most of the balloons made it only as far as France or northern Spain. But six teams -- including Richard Abruzzo of New Mexico and Carol Rymer Davis of Colorado, who won the same race together in 2004 -- ventured even farther across the ...

Stephen Colbert's Congressional Testimony: Appropriate or Waste of Time?

Stephen Colbert's Congressional Testimony: Appropriate or Waste of Time?

(Sept. 24) -- Know your audience: There is perhaps no dictum more central to the craft of comedy. But after watching Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert's performance on Capitol Hill today, many observers are wondering whether he missed the mark. Even before Colbert delivered his opening statement at the House of Representatives hearing on farm labor and illegal immigrants in the guise of the ultra-conservative host of "The Colbert Report," Democrat John Conyers tried to put a stop to it. "I would like to recommend that now we got all this attention that you excuse yourself and you let us ...

Al Gore Ice Sculpture Fuels Global Warming Debate

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (Jan. 6) – Another two-ton ice sculpture of former Vice President Al Gore is back in front of a Fairbanks liquor store. "Frozen Gore" is a dig at Gore's beliefs about climate change. The first statue went on display last year. This year's version is hooked up to the exhaust of a pickup truck to make it appear Gore is spouting hot air. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the smoke drew laughs from a crowd Tuesday as a Gore speech on climate change played over a loudspeaker. Frozengore.com For the second year in a row, an ice sculpture of former Vice President Al ...

Michelle Malkin Takes Aim at Bill O'Reilly, Who Fires Back

Michelle Malkin Takes Aim at Bill O'Reilly, Who Fires Back

A spat of sorts has emerged between blogger and syndicated columnist Michele Malkin and FOX News talk-show host Bill O'Reilly. At issue is a comment left at Hot Air that characterizes Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court, as "militant and socialist." Here's O'Reilly's explanation of the throw-down: The sniping between Malkin and O'Reilly is good theater, but the underlying issue is really rather mundane. As the comment in question was left by a reader, not one of the many fine writers paid to offer opinion pieces on the site, it is hardly fair to take Malkin to task ...

Hot Air and Redstate Denounce Bill O'Reilly

Hot Air and Redstate Denounce Bill O'Reilly

Maybe bipartisanship isn't completely dead, but only mostly dead.Yesterday, I reported that Fox News television personality Bill O'Reilly had stolen my reporting on Helen Thomas' explanation of her "so-called terrorists" remark, and aired an uncredited, butchered version of my video clip.Since then, O'Reilly's actions have been denounced by both Redstate and Hot Air, two of the most influential conservative sites in the blogosphere. I appeared on Ed Morrissey's web TV show yesterday, where Ed described O'Reilly's actions as "small" and "unprofessional." To illustrate just how egregious ...
