Jasmine Revolution: Jon Huntsman, Spotted at China Demonstration, Denies Involvement [VIDEO]

Has the democratic protest movement reached all the way to China? Activists there have been calling for a "Jasmine Revolution," borrowing a popular term for the recent uprising in Tunisia. The word "jasmine" has additional significance in China: It's the name of a folk song that's beloved by many, including current members of the Chinese government. Thus far, the Jasmine Revolution in China has consisted of peaceful weekend demonstrations in public places, including the streets outside department stores. But the Chinese Human Rights Defenders organization says that six activists have been ...

China Cracks Down on Call for 'Jasmine Revolution'

BEIJING -- Chinese authorities cracked down on activists as a call circulated for people to gather in more than a dozen cities Sunday for a "Jasmine Revolution" apparently inspired by the wave of pro-democracy protests sweeping the Middle East. The source of the call was not known, but authorities moved to halt its spread online, and police detained at least 14 people, by one activist's count. Searches for the word "jasmine" were blocked Saturday on China's largest Twitter-like microblog, and the website where the request first appeared said it was hit by an attack. Activists seemed not to ...

Chinese President Makes First Visit to Chicago

CHICAGO -- Mayor Richard Daley's long effort to build ties with the world's second-largest economy seemed to pay off Thursday as Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived for his first visit to Chicago, his only stop outside Washington during this trip. Hu was expected to focus on economic ties between China and Chicago during his whirlwind overnight visit to the city. Experts said the attention from China has been the envy of other U.S. cities and could mark a gigantic - and profitable - step forward for both parties, despite the sometimes rocky U.S.-China relationship. "Our long range goal is to ...

Opinion: Economy Got You Down? Don't Blame China

Opinion: Economy Got You Down? Don't Blame China

In light of the state visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao, there has been and will continue to be no shortage of commentary on the need to somehow force China to "redress" its trade imbalance with the U.S. and stop its alleged currency manipulation, so as to spur economic recovery. The best economists can and do argue endlessly as to whether China is manipulating its currency in order to stoke its exports. I don't profess to know whether such action is having this effect, but I do know that it's absurd -- and dangerous -- to blame China for our economic situation. When it comes to our ...

US Lawmakers Raise Human Rights Concerns With Chinese Leader

WASHINGTON -- U.S. lawmakers say they complained about human rights abuses in China as they met Thursday with President Hu Jintao, a day after the communist leader conceded that his country needed to improve its rights record. Hu met separately with House and Senate leaders on Capitol Hill before addressing trade and economic concerns at the U.S.-China Business Council in Washington. On Wednesday he had spent much of the day in meetings at the White House before a state dinner there. President Barack Obama, too, pressed Hu on the rights issue but said the United States should not fear ...

Harry Reid Meets With 'Dictator' Hu Jintao -- and Reporters Are Told to Keep Mum

Two days after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called Chinese President Hu Jintao a "dictator" on a Nevada talk show, the two men met face to face in the Capitol on Thursday morning. On the heels of Hu's joint press conference with President Obama yesterday -- where the tense subject of human rights dominated the discussion -- journalists covering the congressional meeting were told by staff that the two men would not take questions during a photo opportunity, and that reporters were expected to adhere to journalistic standards and codes of ethics, or risk being ejected from the room. ...

After White House Welcome, Hu Faces Cooler Reception in Congress

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is looking to assure Americans that they should not fear China's economic rise, using Chinese President Hu Jintao's high-profile state visit to announce job-creating business deals worth billions of dollars to U.S. companies. On another big American concern, human rights, Hu conceded that "a lot still needs to be done" to improve China's record. The business deals and Hu's human rights comments were among the highlights of a ceremony-packed day seen as key to building trust between the world's top two powers. Five years after his last visit to the White ...

'Gangster,' 'Dictator,' 'Emperor': Hu Jintao Gets Bad Reviews From Some Lawmakers

President Obama hosted a lavish White House state dinner for Hu Jintao Wednesday, but that didn't stop several lawmakers from publicly calling the Chinese president a repressive leader and human rights abuser. Specifically, Hu is a "gangster," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) said on CNN's "Parker-Spitzer." "Our trouble is we've been treating these people like Englishmen or Belgians . . . when in reality this is a gangster regime that murders its own people, and should be treated that way or they won't respect us." Rohrabacher's comments came on the heels of those by Senate Majority Leader ...

For China and US, a Summit That's All About R-E-S-P-E-C-T

For all the laundry list of profound and resonating issues confronting the United States and China, from North Korea and human rights to currency rates and trade deals that affect hundreds of thousands of American jobs, the goal of President Hu Jintao's state visit to Washington seemed to boil down to two words: mutual respect. And an Obama administration that needs Chinese cooperation and support for many of its own security and economic goals was ready to provide it. At a welcoming ceremony and start-and-stop news conference hindered by glitches in the translation process, ...
