Experts Predict Another Active Hurricane Season, More Impact on US

The hurricane season doesn't officially begin until June 1, but private forecasters already have issued their outlooks for the Atlantic Basin, predicting an active season and the potential for greater impact on the U.S. mainland than last year. The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season was the third most active on record in terms of the number of named storms, but the 19 tropical storms and hurricanes had little direct impact on the United States. Last year, both AccuWeather and the Tropical Meteorology Project accurately predicted the active season, but over-predicted the U.S. impact. In April ...

Were Hurricane Forecasts Accurate or Hyped?

(Dec. 1) -- Government and private meteorologists were nearly in unanimous agreement with their early-season Atlantic Basin hurricane forecasts: This year was going to be fraught with danger. In the end, there were plenty of storms but little U.S. impact from the tropical season that officially ended Tuesday. So how accurate were the forecasts? Jack Plunkett, AP Pictured is farmland near Temple, Texas, that was flooded by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hermine in September. Predicted Number of Storms Early projections were for a season well above the average of 11.3 named storms: ...

Haiti 'Got Very Lucky' as Tomas Skirted Island

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Nov. 6) -- Hurricane Tomas pushed northward from Haiti on Saturday, leaving villagers to mop up, evacuees to return to their tents and most everyone relieved that the country did not suffer what could have been its first big disaster since the January earthquake. The storm's western track caused widespread floods, wind damage along the far edge of Haiti's coast and is blamed for the deaths of at least eight people. It was a serious blow, but far better than had been feared in a nation where storms have been known to kill thousands, and more than 1 million quake ...

Hurricane Tomas Lashes Battered Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Nov. 5) -- Winds of up to 80 mph ripped through parts of Haiti today as Tomas grew from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane. One of the hardest hit areas, The Associated Press reported, was Leogane, where flooding forced families who had already lost their homes in the earthquake to flee again. The seaside town west of Port-au-Prince was near the epicenter of the Jan. 12 earthquake and was 90 percent destroyed. "We got flooded out and we're just waiting for the storm to pass. There's nothing we can do," Johnny Joseph, a 20-year-old resident, told the ...

Cholera, Looming Storm Add to Misery in Haiti

(Nov. 2) -- First Haiti's infrastructure was ripped apart by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that killed 300,000 people and left more than a million homeless. Then a cholera outbreak swept through those refugees' camps, killing more than 300 people and sickening thousands more. And now it looks like a hurricane is coming. Haiti can't seem to get a break. Tropical Storm Tomas has already killed at least 14 people in St. Lucia, the BBC reported, quoting the local tourism minister as saying the worst-hit southern town resembles a "war zone." The storm is gaining strength over the Caribbean, ...

Shary, Now a Hurricane, Moving East of Bermuda

HAMILTON, Bermuda (Oct. 30) -- Bermuda urged islanders to secure their boats as Shary strengthened to become a hurricane Saturday, but authorities said the storm was missing the tiny British Atlantic territory. Authorities discontinued the tropical storm warning for Bermuda late Friday night and said Shary was moving well to the east of the island. The Category 1 hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. The darkening skies did not dampen the spirits of tourists like Bill and Margaret Breen, a married couple from ...

Tropical Storm Shary Forms and Tomas Follows

(Oct. 29) -- The Atlantic basin hurricane season officially ends Nov. 30, but an ongoing burst of activity indicates that this active season is not ready to end quietly. Tropical Storms Shary and Tomas have formed in the Atlantic. Shary will pass well to the east of Bermuda tonight, and the rapidly strengthening Tomas is forecast to become a hurricane in 12 to 24 hours as it crosses the Windward Islands. It's expected to become a major hurricane in the Caribbean by early next week. Shary, a small storm, has strengthened into a 70-mph tropical storm this evening, and the official National ...

Hurricane Richard Batters Tiny Belize

BELIZE CITY (Oct. 25) -- Hurricane Richard battered the tiny Central American country of Belize with heavy rain and howling winds after making landfall just south its largest city, threatening flimsy wood-and-tin houses and forcing tourists to evacuate outlying islands. An estimated 10,000 people in Belize took refuge at storm shelters in schools and churches ahead of the arrival of Richard, which weakened to a tropical storm early Monday as it pushed into northeastern Guatemala. NOAA Hurricane Richard headed for Belize after lashing the Caribbean coast of Honduras with wind and rain. The ...

Hurricane Paula Expected to Hit Western Cuba

CANCUN, Mexico (Oct. 13) -- Hurricane Paula roared off Mexico's top vacation resort of Cancun on Wednesday without immediate reports of major damage, and it was projected to veer into western Cuba's cigar-producing country. The Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, swiped at the island of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres overnight during its northward trek. Late Wednesday morning, the storm was centered about 80 miles southeast of Cabo Catoche on the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.
