Boat With Libyan Immigrants Capsizes Off Italy; 250 Missing

ROME -- A boat carrying as many as 300 migrants from Libya capsized in rough seas off the Italian coast early Wednesday, leaving 250 people unaccounted for. Survivors told of desperately trying to reach rescue boats as those unable to swim screamed in the darkness and pulled one another under the water. If the number of dead is confirmed, it would prove the deadliest crossing to Italy in recent memory, and the worst refugee disaster since a wave of migrants began arriving on Italian shores in January following popular revolts in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. The Italian coast guard rescued ...

Protests Spike in Greece as Government Weighs Support of Attack on Libya

ATHENS, Greece -- Demonstrators took to the streets of the capital today to protest international air strikes against military assets of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi as Greece weighed its support of the allied offensive. Toting anti-war banners and shouting slogans against the bombing raids, hundreds of leftist protesters -- mainly high school and university students -- gathered in central Athens, setting off on a protest march to the Parliament. Similar protests also took place on the island of Crete, where hundreds marched to the U.S.-controlled Souda Bay naval base, which provides ...

Greece Beefing Up Patrols to Stem Immigration From Egypt

ATHENS, Greece -- As the exodus of foreigners and Egyptians continues from Cairo, Greece has beefed up its own border patrols and said today it was considering asking the European Union's force, Frontex, to extend sea patrols to fend off a fresh wave of illegal immigrants hitting Europe. Greece is already grappling with an immigration crisis that has seen more than 128,000 illegals sneak into the country in 2010, the highest influx recorded yet by any European Union member state. Now, fears that the escalating crisis in Egypt could uncork a fresh wave of illegal immigrants coming into ...

Immigrants in Greece Occupy University, Start Hunger Strike

ATHENS, Greece -- More than 200 immigrants occupying a state university in Athens began a hunger strike today, ratcheting up pressure on the government to legalize them as Greece grapples with a massive tide of refugees. The immigrants, all young men and mainly from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, arrived in Athens from the island of Crete late Monday, storming the capital's law school and settling in with blankets and sleeping bags. Fifty others launched similar protests in Thessaloniki in northern Greece, marking what supporters called the biggest hunger strike yet by immigrants in ...

Muslims Harassed During Prayer Festival in Greece

ATHENS, Greece (Nov. 16) -- Ultra-right activists waved Greek flags and pelted Muslims with raw eggs as they gathered today in central Athens to pray during the Eid al-Adha festival. Seven other public prayers, including a gathering before the sprawling courtyard of the country's main university, took place without incident. But at Attiki Square, wedged within the sprawl of concrete apartment units in the heart of Athens, violent incidents marked the latest streak of anti-Islam sentiment in the country. Demonstrators circled the square and hostile locals blared music from nearby apartments, ...

Study: US Hispanics Outlive Whites by 2 Years, Blacks by 7

(Oct. 14) -- Hispanics living in the United States outlive both black and white Americans, according to a new government study. Life expectancy for Hispanics in the U.S. is seven years longer than it is for blacks, and two years longer than it is for whites, the report shows. In other words, a child born of Hispanic origin in 2006 can expect to live to about 80; a black child born the same year can expect to live to about 73 and a white child to 78. The study is the first of its kind to evaluate the life expectancy of Hispanics nationally, and researchers say it further confounds their ...

ACLU Sues Feds Over Detentions of Mentally Ill

(Aug. 2) -- The American Civil Liberties Union and other civil rights activists went to court late today seeking to force the federal government to protect the rights of mentally incompetent immigrant detainees -- at least one of whom, they say, languished in federal custody for nearly five years. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, seeks to compel the federal government -- primarily the departments of Justice and Homeland Security -- to design a system that would identify mentally incompetent detainees and assign them counsel to represent them during ...

Cutting Off the Tap: Court Restrains Breast-Feeding Mom

Cutting Off the Tap: Court Restrains Breast-Feeding Mom

(July 15) -- I had no idea that a judge could put an injunction on a woman's chest. But that's exactly what's happened in Melbourne, Australia, where the Federal Magistrates' Court has ordered a mother to stop breast-feeding her 6-year-old boy. A 6-year-old still breast-feeding? Well, I can't be too hard on her as a parent... It's one way to keep a kid from talking in the movie theater, and any parent who makes that happen is a Parent of the Year candidate in my book. From Fark: Judge orders woman not to suckle her 6-year old son, issues immediate restraining order on both breasts ...

Immmigration Reform is a Moral Duty, Religious Leaders tell House Committee

WASHINGTON – Religious leaders Wednesday urged members of a House committee to consult their own religious sensibilities and pass some version of immigration reform, a moral duty they said is reflected in Scripture. The House Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law hosted a hearing on the moral and ethical aspects of immigration reform. The witnesses included the Rev. Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University Law School, Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the Catholic diocese of Tucson, Ariz., and Richard Land, a Southern Baptist evangelical. ...
