She gave the infant to a woman dressed as a nurse, was told Carlina would be fine and went home to rest. When Joy returned, Carlina was gone. 'Baby Yoga': How Young Is Too Young? [VIDEOS]

Would you swing a baby around by its limbs? Russian yoga instructor Lena Fokina would, and a video of her "baby yoga" routine has gone viral -- making many American parents cringe in horror. In the clip, Fokina takes a 2-week-old infant through exercises she calls "dynamic gymnastics." Watch: Parenting blog DadWagon caught up with Fokina, who explained that these exercises are not considered shocking in Russia, where some parents believe that swinging newborns in the air helps develop their strength, reflexes and sense of independence. But is that claim true? According to pediatrician ...

But when the clock struck 1 a.m., Zeller said, doctors and nurses in the delivery room started focusing on that one magic ...

Ever wonder what you were like when you were growing up? Two 11-year-old sisters in England will have just that chance, thanks to the amazing birth of their newborn triplet who had been on ice since she was conceived more than a decade ago. Study: Mom's Voice Has Unique Effect on Baby's Brain

(Dec. 16) -- There's nothing like a mother's voice. New research from the University of Montreal shows that a newborn's brain responds differently to its mother's voice than to the voices of others. The mother's voice can spark activity in the parts of the brain responsible for learning language. When the child hears others speak, the reactions can be very different. "This is exciting research that proves for the first time that the newborn's brain responds strongly to the mother's voice and shows, scientifically speaking, that the mother's voice is special to babies," said lead researcher ...

The Anti-Vaccine Movement: Blinding Us With Pseudoscience

Despite the American infatuation with gambling, in other areas of life we shy away from random chance. We like cause and effect. We like the story of one thing leading to another in a nice, straight line. And if such a story does not declare itself, we'll invent one. Our need for a clear, predictable pattern leads us down the wayward path of conspiracy theories. In the absence of a cause that makes sense to us, we'll spend hours, days, years looking for one. Why? Peter Jennings alluded to a possible reason in his thorough 2003 documentary "Peter Jennings Reporting: The Kennedy Assassination ...

Study: Newborns Learn During Sleep

Study: Newborns Learn During Sleep

(May 19) -- Newborn babies spend most of their time sleeping, but new research suggests that these infants are taking advantage of the nap time by learning while they nod off. A research team at the University of Florida evaluated 26 1- to 2-day-old newborns as they slept. Unlike adults, whose brains stop displaying signs of learning during sleep, the babies exhibited brain waves that indicated ongoing engagement with the physical world. As the babies slept, researchers played an auditory tone, alternated with a gentle puff of air to the eyelids of each baby. After 20 minutes, the babies ...
