On Anniversary of Coal Mine Disaster, Families Still Waiting for Answers

As a minister in Appalachian coal country, the Rev. Dennis Sparks knows more than he wants to about grief. He serves as executive director of the West Virginia Council of Churches and has consoled countless families of coal miners who've lost husbands, fathers and brothers in an industry that annually kills 30 to 40 miners and injures hundreds more every year. Sparks counseled families after the mine disaster in Sago, W.Va., claimed a dozen men in 2006, and he was there for the long wait when an explosion one year ago today at the Upper Big Branch mine killed 29 miners and seriously injured ...

SEC's Porn-Watching Employees Earned Over $200,000 Per Year

It's safe to say that spending eight hours of company time watching pornography would get most workers canned. Not so at the Securities and Exchange Commission, it seems. New documents regarding a 2005-10 investigation into the agency's porn-surfing employees reveal that several workers were "disciplined" for downloading erotica on their SEC-issued computers but never fired. A Freedom of Information Act request from Denver-based lawyer Kevin Evans asking the SEC to release details regarding the investigated employees has also shown that some of the distracted individuals were earning ...

Police Frustrated by Lack of Leads in NC Teen's Disappearance

Two weeks after a 16-year-old North Carolina girl disappeared while visiting relatives in Baltimore, police appear to be hitting a dead end in the investigation. There are no suspects, no motive and few leads to follow in the disappearance of Phylicia Barnes. "It is almost like she completely vanished," Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told AOL News today. "We have nothing tangible in terms of leads. There was a big meeting today -- we have gone 14 days now -- and not a single sighting or a single tip has turned out to be true." Baltimore Police Phylicia ...

Israel Launches Inquiry Into Deadly Flotilla Raid

JERUSALEM (June 14) -- Israel's Cabinet today approved a commission to investigate the raid on a Turkish-flagged ship two weeks ago that left nine activists dead.
