Denis Donaldson died when an attacker shot him from close range with a shotgun at the door of his isolated cottage in County Donegal on April 4, 2006. The 56-year-old Irish Republican Army veteran had gone into hiding after admitting he had served as a British intelligence mole within the Sinn Fein-IRA movement for two decades. He was one of several such spies planted by British ...
DUBLIN -- Northern Ireland police say a 25-year-old officer has been killed by a booby-trap bomb placed under his car. Neighbors of the victim say the car was put ablaze by the blast in a neighborhood of Omagh. They say the victim had only recently joined the police force. Since 2007, Irish Republican Army dissidents have planted dozens of booby-trap bombs under the private cars of police officers. The bombs usually fail to detonate and had killed nobody until Saturday. Previously, two policemen have lost their legs in attacks in May 2008 and January 2010. IRA dissidents committed the ...
While his name might not ring a bell for all movie fans, British actor Pete Postlethwaite, who died Sunday at the age of 64 after a long battle with cancer, had a face you couldn't forget. Some called him "grizzled," others described him as "odd-looking." But even in a Hollywood where looks can often trump talent, Steven Spielberg called him "the best actor in the world." Postlethwaite used all his talents, both physical and emotional, to give life to a variety of roles in his films, both political and otherwise, as well as to many political causes. Many filmgoers will primarily remember ...
LONDON (Nov. 15) -- For almost 40 years, Gerry Adams has been the leading political voice of the Republican movement in British-ruled Northern Ireland. But now the Sinn Fein president plans to shift his focus south of the border and run for election in the Republic of Ireland. When the next Irish general election is called, Adams will stand in the Louth constituency on the Republic's east coast and quit his seats in Northern Ireland's Legislative Assembly and the British Parliament in London. He said Sunday that it was his "duty to step forward," as his left-wing party could heal the ...
With growing concern about a possible strike by Irish dissidents, Great Britain raised its terror alert Friday, saying an attack on the British mainland is a "strong possibility." The British Home Office said the threat has gone from moderate to "substantial," the middle rung on a five-point scale. The last successful attack by a group opposed to Britain's involvement in Northern Ireland was in 2001, when a car bomb exploded, injuring 11 people in west London, the Associated Press reported. Since then, a peace accord between Protestant loyalists and minority Catholic nationalists has taken ...
LONDON (Aug. 24) -- A Catholic priest was behind a series of car bombs that killed nine civilians in a Northern Irish village in 1972 and was subsequently protected from prosecution by a conspiracy involving the church, police and the British government, an investigation has found. The British government today said it was "profoundly sorry" about its role the cover-up, while Northern Ireland's Catholic Church said it accepted the findings, but rejected any claims of a conspiracy. On the morning of July 31, 1972, three vehicles exploded within moments of each other on the main street of ...
LONDON (Feb. 23) -- Northern Ireland's police chief has condemned dissident members of the Irish Republican Army for giving his men less than 20 minutes to clear the center of a town before detonating an explosives-packed car. "The time we got to respond was very limited," Northern Ireland's chief constable, Matt Baggott, told reporters. "It was reckless and callous." The 225-pound car bomb that terrorists rammed into the gates of Court House in Newry, 30 miles southwest of Belfast, on Monday night went off just 17 minutes after police received their first telephone warning. The explosion -- ...
On Friday word came down that Irish folk singer Liam Clancy, 74 years old, had died. Within minutes Facebook was awash in the news. Radio DJs announced they were planning tributes. Others, including me, posted Clancy Brothers videos. ...
