Why I Hate Year-End List Stories -- a Rant with a List

Why I Hate Year-End List Stories -- a Rant with a List

The Big News this week is that there isn't any Big News. Lots of snow falling on New York and the rest of the Northeast (save perpetually hot-air-filled Washington) does not qualify as a stunning revelation. That is -- and some of you may want to take notes -- what happens during winter. Even more predictable were the breathless accounts of grumpy travelers trapped at airports because America's much-envied and always-dependable air travel system somehow failed. Here's another shocker: The streets of Manhattan's Upper East Side (cue the snow-free pictures of Mike Bloomberg's apartment ...

The Top Five Scandal, Divorce or Remorse Stories, From Abramoff to Sanford

Prison. Scandal. Adultery. Delusion. Death. Divorce. Remorse. And always, reinvention. It's been quite the year for denizens of the Republic of Dish, including a quintet of individuals or couples seemingly poised for next acts in 2011. Washington uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff is writing a book about influence peddling, a subject he knows intimately. He left prison in June after serving 42 months for corruption and fraud, did another six months of work-release at a Kosher pizzeria in Baltimore, and is now on probation. Abramoff, who lives outside Washington, is not using a ghostwriter, a ...

Jury Gets Tom DeLay Money-Laundering Case

Jury Gets Tom DeLay Money-Laundering Case

Closing arguments concluded Monday in the money-laundering trial of former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas), and the case has gone to a Travis County jury. Lawyers for the former majority leader told jurors the charges against DeLay were politically motivated, brought because Democrats were unhappy with congressional redistricting he pushed through in 2003, The Houston Chronicle reported. Lead prosecutor Gary Cobb countered by naming Democrats that have been tried on corruption charges. "Even those who govern must be governed and follow the law," Cobb said. The ex-congressman, once dubbed "The ...

Disgraced Ex-Congressman Bob Ney Studying Buddhism at Indian Temple

Disgraced Ex-Congressman Bob Ney Studying Buddhism at Indian Temple

He's traveled quite a path. Former Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) served six terms in Congress, then spent 17 months in federal prison for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal. Now he is studying meditation at a Buddhist Temple in India. Ney, 56, told the National Journal in a phone interview that since September he has lived in a $10-a-day rented room in Dharamsala, the Dalai Lama's headquarters-in-exile for more than 50 years. The ex-congressman quit drinking, dropped 60 pounds and spends his days meditating with monks and learning the Tibetan language. Ney, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to ...

Politics in Our Movies: From 'Mr. Smith' to 'Casino Jack'

Politics in Our Movies: From 'Mr. Smith' to 'Casino Jack'

All across America this lame-duck congressional season, we're driving past malls or walking down Main Streets where theater marquees offer two major motion pictures "about" politics: "Casino Jack" starring Kevin Spacey and "Fair Game" starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. But the truth is, every movie is "about" politics. Every work of art creates a vision of reality and rules for that realm. Even when a movie is not a fact-driven documentary, what's on film are "people" making choices of conscience and circumstance. On some level, choice always involves politics -- and that includes the ...

'Casino Jack': Abramoff Film Should Be Required Viewing for New Lawmakers

'Casino Jack': Abramoff Film Should Be Required Viewing for New Lawmakers

Newly elected Senate and House members will hit town next week for what is quaintly called "orientation." Activities include posing on the Capitol steps for the freshman class picture, caucusing with party leaders and learning the quickest routes to the members-only elevators and subterranean trams. Missing from their schedule, alas, is a screening of "Casino Jack," starring Kevin Spacey as uber-lobbyist and mega-fraudster Jack Abramoff. Along with an equally sleazy K Streeter (and former Capitol Hill staffer) named Mike Scanlon and a few underlings, Abramoff ripped off millions of dollars ...

Opinion: Religious Right and the Tea Party: A Marriage of Convenience?

Opinion: Religious Right and the Tea Party: A Marriage of Convenience?

(Sept. 28) -- Many Americans were alarmed in the 1980s when the religious right seemed determined to control everyone's life from the moment of conception until the moment of death. These days, many share a similar distaste for the tea party movement, which believes some mystical force called "The Market" will make all of America's problems dissipate in a frenzy of mergers and acquisitions that will trickle benefits to the unemployed, the uninsured and the underserved. ANOTHER VIEW The Tea Party Unites Fiscal and Social Conservatism -- Penny Nance, CEO, Concerned Women for ...

Tom DeLay Money-Laundering Case Going to Trial in Texas

Former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) has been demanding a trial on his money-laundering indictment since 2005, and on Tuesday a Texas judge granted his wish. At a pre-trial hearing in Austin, Senior Judge Pat Priest said the trial would go forward but he did not set a start date, The Associated Press reported. "I've been asking for a trial now for five years. Finally I'm getting a trial," DeLay, 63, told reporters outside the courtroom. On Wednesday, DeLay's attorneys will ask the judge to move the trial to the former House majority leader's home county near Houston, where they say he's more ...

Former Congressman Tom DeLay Won't Be Charged in Abramoff Investigation

The Justice Department has ended its six-year criminal investigation of ties between former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) and convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff without filing any charges against the ex-House majority leader. DeLay's attorneys said federal prosecutors informed them last week that it was ending the investigation, Politico reported. "I always knew this day would come," DeLay said Monday during a conference call with reporters. "My only hope was that it would come much sooner than the six years we've been doing this. While I will never understand why it took so long for the Justice ...
