James Traficant's Latest Comeback on Hold in Ohio

Jim Traficant's latest comeback is still breathing, but barely. Traficant, the colorful former Ohio congressman who was released from prison last year after serving time for bribery and related corruption charges, is trying to get on the ballot in eastern Ohio as an independent candidate for Congress. Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner said Wednesday that the Mahoning and Trumbull county boards of election must decide by Sept. 1 whether Traficant's has sufficient petitions to qualify for the November ballot, the Youngstown Vindicator said. The speaker, who served seven years on the Ethics Committee before she joined the House leadership, would not comment on Rangel's situation specifically. Republican Leader John Boehner contended ...

Former Rep. James A. Traficant of Ohio, released from federal prison last year, has come up short in a petition-gathering drive for a bid to win back his old job on Capitol Hill. Traficant, a tough-talking former sheriff with a wild hairdo, served seven years on bribery and related corruption charges before getting out of prison in September. He fell 107 signatures short in Trumbull County in an attempt to qualify for the November ballot, running for Congress as an independent, his political adviser Linda Kovachik told the Associated Press. Traficant is expected to appeal the ruling. His ...

Jim Traficant, a nine-term congressman from Ohio, unloading on his former House colleagues on last night's Hardball for the first time since his release from prison this month after serving seven years. Traficant insisted to Chris Matthews that he was "not guilty in any way," of the charges of bribery, ...
