Chernobyl Children to Arrive in Israel

JERUSALEM -- Early Thursday, a plane carrying 25 children from the Chernobyl area will touch down in Israel, where the children will begin their new lives. The airlift comes the same week as the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the worst nuclear disaster in modern history. The children, between the age of 6 and 12, all suffer from medical conditions related to the Chernobyl disaster. "Even 25 years afterwards, there is still harmful radiation in the environment," Yossi Swerdlove, the international director of Chabad Children of Chernobyl, told AOL News. "It affects children even ...

Israel's Foreign Minister Told He Will Be Indicted for Fraud

JERUSALEM -- The Israeli attorney general today told Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman that, pending a hearing, he will be indicted for fraud, money laundering and witness-tampering, a move that could eventually bring the collapse of the government. Lieberman faces up to 10 years in jail if convicted. The draft indictment had been expected this week but caught Lieberman off guard as he sat on the podium of his ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party in Jerusalem. Lieberman's face tightened as he took the call from his lawyer. AFP / Getty Images Israeli Foreign Minister ...

Did Journalist Find 'THE Nails' Used to Crucify Jesus?

JERUSALEM -- Controversial journalist Simcha Jacobovici says he may have found the nails that were used to crucify Jesus more than 2,000 years ago. He chronicled his Indiana Jones-type search in a new documentary called "The Nails of the Cross," which was screened today at a news conference in Jerusalem and will be broadcast in the U.S., Canada and Israel in the coming weeks. Jacobovici presented two first-century Roman nails that were bent "in a way that is consistent with crucifixion." He contends that these are the same nails found in the burial tomb of Caiaphas, the Jewish high priest ...

Missile Hits Israeli School Bus; Israel Responds With Strikes on Gaza

JERUSALEM -- An Israeli teenager was critically wounded when an anti-tank missile hit a school bus near the Gaza border, and Israel responded today with airstrikes on Gaza that killed at least one Palestinian. The cross-border violence was the latest increase in tension between Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement, which controls Gaza, and raised fears of a new cycle of violence. "The boy was lying on the ground bleeding," a member of the rescue services told the Haaretz newspaper. "The bus driver was conscious and hysterical. The entire bus was destroyed; it was a horrifying ...

Israel Panel Approving New East Jerusalem Building

JERUSALEM -- Jerusalem officials on Monday gave preliminary approval for the building of 942 new apartments in a Jewish development in the city's contested eastern sector, threatening to create new friction ahead of the Israeli president's White House visit. Although it would take years before construction starts, the project in the neighborhood of Gilo will likely infuriate the Palestinians at an especially delicate diplomatic moment. Israeli President Shimon Peres is scheduled to meet Tuesday with President Barack Obama to explore ways to jump-start stalled Israeli-Palestinian ...

Israel Retaliates for Deadly Blast, Rocket Attacks

JERUSALEM -- Israeli warplanes hit Hamas targets in Gaza early Thursday, retaliating for rocket attacks on Israeli cities, as tension peaked over the first deadly bombing targeting Israelis in Jerusalem in several years. A blast Israel quickly blamed on Palestinian militants ripped through a bus stop in Jerusalem on Wednesday, killing a woman, wounding two dozen other people and intensifying fears that a period of relative calm could be ending as hopes for a negotiated peace fade. Violence has been on the rise, with the knife slaying this month of a Jewish settler family as they slept and ...

One Dead, Dozens Injured in Bombing Outside Jerusalem Bus Station

JERUSALEM -- A 59-year-old woman was killed and 30 people were wounded when a bomb exploded this afternoon across from Jerusalem's central bus station. Police said the 3-pound bomb placed in a bag opposite the station was a terrorist attack. "We are talking about a terror attack," said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. The blast was heard throughout Jerusalem, and police sealed off the entrance to the city, causing huge traffic jams during the afternoon rush hour. Police set up roadblocks throughout the country, checking ID cards belonging to Palestinians. Two Palestinian organizations in ...

Explosion Rocks Jerusalem Bus Stop; Woman Killed

JERUSALEM -- A bomb struck a crowded bus stop in central Jerusalem Wednesday, killing one woman and wounding more than 20 other people in what authorities said was the first major Palestinian militant attack in the city in several years. The bombing brought back memories of the second Palestinian uprising last decade, a period in which hundreds of Israelis were killed by suicide bombings in Jerusalem and other major cities. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Israeli police blamed Palestinian militants. The attack came against the backdrop of a rising wave of violence that ...

Newest Exchange Between Gaza Militants, Israel Leaves 1 Dead

JERUSALEM -- Gaza militants barraged southern Israel with rockets and mortars Wednesday, drawing retaliatory Israeli airstrikes in an escalation of the gravest hostilities in the area since Israel went to war in the Palestinian territory two years ago. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed decisive action against militants and suggested that future operations would not be surgical. "No state would tolerate ongoing rocket fire on its cities and its citizens, and the state of Israel obviously will not tolerate it," Netanyahu told parliament. A text message from Gaza's Hamas rulers ...

Army: Palestinian Kills 5 in West Bank Settlement

JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military says a Palestinian has infiltrated a Jewish West Bank settlement and killed five people. Israeli media is reporting that the dead are all members of the same family - parents and three children. The military says it is sweeping the area in search of the perpetrator and has set up checkpoints throughout the West Bank. The overnight attack early Saturday in the northern West Bank settlement of Itamar is the first of its kind in years. It marks a rare outburst of violence during a relatively calm period. Itamar is home to some of the West Bank's most fervent ...
