Unemployment Dips to 8.9 Percent, 192K Jobs Added

WASHINGTON - Employers in February hired at the fastest pace in almost a year and the unemployment rate fell to 8.9 percent - a nearly two-year low. The economy added 192,000 jobs last month, with factories, professional and business services, education and health care among those expanding employment. Retailers, however, trimmed jobs. State and local government, wrestling with budget shortfalls, slashed 30,000 jobs, the most since November. The government's report Friday bolstered hopes that employers will shift into a more aggressively hiring mode and allow the economic recovery to get on ...

Opinion: One Cheer for the Unemployment Number

Opinion: One Cheer for the Unemployment Number

The sharp drop in the unemployment rate to 9 percent should be treated as good news. Any drop, after all, is welcome. But just how good this news is depends entirely on how low your expectations are for this economic recovery. After all, the unemployment rate has been at or above 9 percent for 21 months now -- a grim record that hasn't been seen since the Great Depression. And keep in mind, too, that Christina Romer, then head of the White House's Council of Economic Adviser, predicted in January 2009 unemployment wouldn't get above 8 percent with the economic stimulus plan -- it was ...

Unemployment Rate Falls to 19-Month Low of 9.4 Percent

The nation's unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent last month, its lowest level in 19 months. That was because more people found jobs, but also because some people gave up on their job searches. ...

An Unexpectedly Chilly Jobs Report for November

(Dec. 3) - The economy added just 39,000 jobs in November -- substantially less than expected. And the jobless rate rose to 9.8%. The report shows that despite a year of GDP growth, America still hasn't overcome its worst job drought in decades. ...

Jobless Rate Rises to 9.8 Percent as Job Growth Slows

WASHINGTON (Dec. 3) - The nation's unemployment rate climbed to 9.8 percent in November, a seven-month high, as hiring slowed. Employers added only 39,000 jobs last month, a sharp decline from the 172,000 created in October, the Labor Department reported Friday. The weakness was widespread. Retailers, factories, construction companies, financial firms and the government all cut jobs last month. Many economists were predicting the addition of 150,000 jobs. The economy has recently flashed signs of gaining momentum with busier factories, rising auto sales and a good start to the holiday ...

Jobless Benefits Cutoff Begins for 2 Million Americans

(Dec. 1) -- Nearly 2 million Americans start to lose their extended unemployment benefits today, leaving people without jobs struggling to hold on to their housing and feed their families while facing a somber holiday season without money for presents and festivities. Work has dried up for Shawn Slonsky, a union electrician who is using his last unemployment check to pay for groceries, utilities, gas and child support. Unable to afford gifts or a Christmas tree, he told The Associated Press he's not looking forward to the holidays. Melissa Nelson, AP Felicia Robbins of Pensacola, Fla., lost ...

Ignore Your Inner Cynic and Vote on Tuesday

"Tribute to Her," uploaded to the Internet on Nov. 7, 2008, is a slideshow of Election Day photographs. YouTube member SailorBrownie described her post as a "dedication to all those Black Americans who went out on Tuesday and voted. We made history." While it's not altogether clear who is the "Her" in the title of the video, it might as well be the woman collapsed on the floor in tears. A girl nearby touches her cheek with a little confusion and a lot tenderness for the woman who is, most likely, her mother. The pictures are set to the Beatles song, "Blackbird" -- a good choice, considering ...

David Brooks Says Unemployed Care More About Values Than Jobs

(Oct. 29) -- The latest economic growth numbers aren't good: The economy grew just 2 percent in the third quarter, the Commerce Department reported today. It's a "slight uptick" from the previous quarter, reports The New York Times, but not enough to put a dent in the country's 9.6 percent unemployment rate. "The economy needs to produce 130,000 to 150,000 jobs a month just to keep pace with population growth, a number it has not hit in many months," the Times continues. You would think jobs would be the primary concern of the large number of unemployed, but not so, says The New York ...

Jobless Claims Fall to Two-Month Low

(Sept. 16) -- Initial jobless claims fell to a two-month low of 450,000, confounding analyst expectations. Jobless claims dipped 3,000 in the week ending Sept. 11, the Department of Labor said. The revised figure for the previous week was 453,000. Analysts polled by Reuters forecast claims rising to 460,000. ...
