A Washington Post/ABC News poll, conducted March 10-13, found that among eight frequently mentioned candidates, Palin was viewed negatively by a significantly higher percentage of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents than the others. (Story; Poll data). While 58 percent expressed a favorable view of her, those seeing her unfavorably added up to 37 percent. That's a jump from a year ago when the number ...
Sarah Palin talks a lot about the tea party. On Fox News last week, she said, "I find inspiration in tea party patriots [and] those with common sense who aren't playing a lot of games." She could be considered the tea party's godmother. With her Sarah PAC and support for 2010 tea party candidates, Palin has generated a lot of good will, not to mention publicity, for a movement that began only two years ago. She also isn't afraid to attack popular Republicans such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Related Stories Sarah Palin's India Trip: Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela ...
President Obama will nominate Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to be the next ambassador to China, ABC News reported Monday, quoting an unidentified senior administration official. CNN and The Associated Press also reported that Locke would be nominated. Locke, a former two-term governor of Washington, will replace former Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah, a Republican who is considering a run for the presidency and whose resignation as ambassador is effective in April. "The president asked him to take this job because Locke had the experience and relationships necessary to take on this key post," ABC ...
Everyone is used to the familiar "horse race" poll that tells us who is out front when it comes to a campaign, but Quinnipiac University has a different measure for some of today's leading political personalities: namely, who ranks the "warmest" and "coldest" on a "feelings thermometer"? ...
Has the democratic protest movement reached all the way to China? Activists there have been calling for a "Jasmine Revolution," borrowing a popular term for the recent uprising in Tunisia. The word "jasmine" has additional significance in China: It's the name of a folk song that's beloved by many, including current members of the Chinese government. Thus far, the Jasmine Revolution in China has consisted of peaceful weekend demonstrations in public places, including the streets outside department stores. But the Chinese Human Rights Defenders organization says that six activists have been ...
For the second successive year, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas won the presidential straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, capturing 30 percent of the vote. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts was second in the straw poll with 23 percent of the vote, Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio announced at the conference in Washington held by the American Conservative Union. The others on the ballot finished far behind. Related Stories CPAC, Day 2: Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul and More Haley Barbour to Host Blogger Happy Hour ...
WASHINGTON -- U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, a Republican with potential presidential ambitions, submitted a letter of resignation to the White House on Monday announcing he intends to leave the post April 30, a senior administration official said. Huntsman, a former governor of Utah, was appointed ambassador by President Barack Obama in 2009. Huntsman's plans have generated considerable attention in political circles because his foreign policy experience could stand out in a crowded GOP field. Earlier Monday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Huntsman had informed officials of ...
Jon Huntsman, the U.S. ambassador to China, announced Monday that he will resign his post this spring. This could be a sign that the former Utah governor intends to run in the Republican presidential primaries, a rumor that's been circulating for some time. The Obama administration does not seem particularly upset by Huntsman's departure, or by the prospect of his candidacy. President Obama has already joked about the situation, saying, "I'm sure that him having worked so well with me will be a great asset in any Republican primary." Chief of staff Bill Daley has had his own fun, calling ...
When President Obama appointed Utah's popular Republican governor, Jon Huntsman, to be his ambassador to China in May 2009, it looked like a smart move to show Obama's willingness to reach across party lines and, to the more cynical, a way to sideline a possible opponent in 2012. But that second calculation, if it was in Obama's mind, may be proved wrong. Several news organizations, including Politico and ABCNews.com, are reporting that Huntsman may quit the China job this spring to prepare for a presidential run and that he will make his decision by summer. Talk about a Huntsman candidacy ...
(April 3) -- Scaling the world's tallest mountain 19 times is an almost unthinkable feat, but for one Nepalese Sherpa, it has been the means for a bigger goal: getting his children an education in the United States. Apa Sherpa, who holds the record for the number of successful climbs to the summit of Mount Everest, has often said that he makes the death-defying ascent so that his children won't ever have to. Now, as he prepares to attempt to reach Everest's peak for the 20th time, the 49-year-old is grateful for the opportunities that climbing has given him. Courtesy of Jerry Mika Apa ...
