A large, framed Newsweek cover of Katharine Graham, published when she died a decade ago, hangs in the reception area of the magazine's Washington bureau. I have no doubt that as matriarch of The Washington Post Company, Graham would approve of the new owner selected by Donald Graham, her son and successor, to give Newsweek a new lease on life after several quarters of punishing financial losses. Sidney Harman is a known quantity in Washington who, together with his wife, Jane, moved in the same social and political circles as Mrs. Graham. The fact that Dr. Harman, who holds a Ph.D. in higher ...
Sidney Harman, the 91-year-old hi-fi billionaire, will become the new owner of Newsweek under a contract announced by the venerable magazine's current owner, The Washington Post Company. Harman promised no major changes to Newsweek's staff or editorial approach, but as word of the sale emerged, editor Jon Meacham said he would step down immediately, The New York Times reported. "I will always be grateful for the opportunity ...

Editor Jon Meacham reached Obama senior adviser David Axelrod, and the president eventually agreed. Since reformatting and refocusing itself last year, the struggling magazine has become a forum for top power brokers and political minds to discuss ...

Judis wrote on the Web site of The New Republic. He was referring to the editor of Newsweek and a column he wrote for the magazine's Dec. 7 issue, boldly headlined "Why Dick Cheney Should Run for President." Judis is far from the only journalist savaging Meacham's column as well as the revamped Newsweek. In the column, the editor argued that Cheney is a "man of conviction" who would give Americans the chance to vote for ...
