Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(July 11) -- Two of the children of the Russian spies sent to Moscow from the U.S. last week in a swap with Western intelligence moles are appealing for financial help from the American Red Cross, saying their parents' abrupt departure has left them "broke," The New York Post reported. While Peruvian-born journalist Vicky Pelaez and her husband, Mikhail Vasenkov, who used the alias "Juan Lazaro," spend their days in a Moscow apartment paid for by the Russian government, their children, Juan Lazaro Jr., 17, and his half brother, Waldo Mariscal, 38, are struggling to make ends meet in their ...
(July 9) -- Vicky Pelaez is not like the others. For the other nine spies, life came full circle today when a plane carried them home to Russia in the most high-profile spy swap since the end of the Cold War. But for Peruvian-born Pelaez, the one-way ticket to Russia is a new adventure, only the latest chapter in the very full and complicated life of an admitted spy, radical journalist, wife and mother. Diario La Republica / AP Peruvian-born Vicky Pelaez was one of 10 people who pleaded guilty in the U.S. Thursday on charges of spying for Russia. Even within a ring of secret Russian ...
(July 9) -- The spy kid plays a mean Beethoven. Juan Lazaro Sr. and Vicky Palaez are headed to Moscow as part of the extraordinary spy swap between the Russian and U.S. governments. But Juan Lazaro Jr., the couple's 17-year-old son, will, at least for now, be staying behind in New York, where he studies music. As ABC News reported, the younger Lazaro is a piano prodigy, and a quick check of YouTube turned up some impressive footage of a few of his recent recitals. Here he is at the age of 16, performing Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 3 in C Major, 4th Movement. No word on whether the footage ...
UPDATE: "Ten Russian agents have been flown to Vienna after being deported from the US as part of a Cold War-style spy swap between Moscow and Washington," Sky.com reported. "They are expected to be handed over to Russian officials in the Austrian capital." (July 8) -- An amicable trade agreement between the United States and Russia was reached this afternoon to much fanfare. Of course, this was no ordinary deal, as the bargaining chips were none other than the lives of some 10 Russian and four Western spies. Details of the swap began to emerge even before a New York judge ordered the ...
(July 2) -- On the evening her parents were arrested, 11-year-old Katie Murphy stood outside and watched federal agents swarm her suburban New Jersey home. From three houses away, a neighbor says he saw Katie, the older daughter of accused Russian spies Richard and Cynthia Murphy, standing on the lawn holding a balloon animal as her parents were taken away in handcuffs. Alan Sokolow, the Murphys' neighbor, described the scene as tragic. "There she was with one of those balloon animals and -- to come home to that -- it's horrendous," he said. Elizabeth Williams, AP Accused agents for ...
(July 1) -- A defendant known as "Juan Lazaro" has admitted that he worked for Russia's intelligence service and declared that his loyalty to "the Service" was greater even than his love for his son, federal prosecutors said today. The alleged confession was detailed in a court document released as nine of the 10 alleged spies arrested last week were due to appear for bail hearings. Several of the hearings were postponed and just one of the suspects -- Lazaro's wife -- was granted bail. Lazaro made a "lengthy post-arrest statement" on June 27 after waiving his Miranda rights, according to a ...
(June 30) -- Mikhail Semenko may be a member of a Russian espionage operation, but on Facebook, at least, the accused spy is not as discreet. Photographs of the 20-something partying with friends, wearing a Bill Clinton mask and even sporting a "USSR" shirt were spotted on his Facebook page and posted Tuesday by Gawker, an online gossip site that found someone with access to Semenko's profile. (June 30) -- The children of the 11 suspected secret agents are not accused of being involved in a Russian spy ring. But their lives are being turned upside down anyway. The suspected spies have seven children among them, most of whom are thought to be younger than 18. But while plenty of details have emerged about the James Bond-like activities of their parents, very little is known about the children, or what they may be going through. Dr. Richard Gallagher, a child psychologist at the NYU Child Study Center, told AOL News that the children of the accused spies may spend years questioning ...
(June 29) -- So far, little is known about the true identities of the 11 people accused of spying for Russia. But the group has at least one thing in common: Their neighbors are shocked. From Seattle to New York, neighbors and acquaintances have described the suspects as strikingly ordinary members of the community, upstanding citizens who walked their children to the bus stop and seemed to enjoy things like gardening. In other words, they fit it. A look at the suspects: Cynthia and Richard Murphy, Montclair, N.J. Who they are: The New Jersey couple appeared to be living the American ...
After an FBI investigation spanning several years, ten people were taken into custody on Sunday across the northeastern United States and have been charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. Attorney, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a press release. According to the D.O.J., eight of the accused were involved in what it termed as "long-term, deep-cover assignments" for the Russian government. Two of the defendants were arrested for participating in the covert Russian operation. Nine of those picked up were charged with conspiracy to ...
