WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Can Be Extradited to Sweden, Judge Rules

LONDON -- In a swift and stunning rebuke, a British court has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange must return to Sweden to face questioning on sexual assault charges. He has seven days to appeal the ruling; otherwise he must leave the U.K. within 10 days. Assange has been fighting extradition since he was taken into custody and later placed on house arrest in December. He has consistently denied the allegations made by two women in August 2010. Assange also fears eventual extradition to the U.S., where he could face espionage charges related to WikiLeaks' release of thousands of ...

Judge Says WikiLeaks' Assange Can Be Extradited to Sweden

LONDON - A British judge says WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can be extradited to Sweden over sex crimes claims. Judge Howard Riddle says the allegations of rape and sexual molestation by two women are extraditable offenses and a Swedish warrant was properly issued. Lawyers for Assange have a week to appeal Thursday's decision. Riddle says "there is simply no reason to believe there has been a mistake" in issuing the warrant. Assange has been out on bail during the extradition fight. His lawyers have questioned Sweden's judicial process and expressed concern their client risks being ...

Assange, Berlusconi and the Sex Lives of Others

Assange, Berlusconi and the Sex Lives of Others

LONDON -- In his impassioned defense of Bill Clinton during the Senate's 1999 impeachment trial, Arkansas Sen. Dale Bumpers paraphrased a famous quote by the journalist H.L. Mencken: "When you hear somebody say, 'This is not about money' -- it's about money. And when you hear somebody say, 'This is not about sex' -- it's about sex." How true. Back then, we all said that what we really cared about was whether President Clinton had lied under oath. But what we really focused on was the prurient testimony of one Monica Lewinsky, with her sordid tales of stained blue dresses and the creative use ...

Assange Lawyer: Is Toe Sucking Also Rape in Sweden?

Julian Assange's extradition hearing came to a close today as lawyers argued over the hot-potato issue hanging over the proceedings: the definition of rape. The 39-year-old founder of WikiLeaks is wanted for questioning in Sweden on four different allegations of sexual misconduct with two women during two brief liaisons he had with them last August. The most serious and controversial allegation, having sex with one of the women while she was asleep, is considered "minor rape" or "third-degree rape" in Sweden. Julian Assange Extradition Hearing to Continue on Friday

LONDON -- WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange returned to British court Tuesday for what was meant to be the second and final day of his extradition hearing. But after a long day of questioning, the judge has still not rendered a verdict, and the case will resume on Friday. Assange is fighting his extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning concerning allegations of sexual assault made by two women in August. On Monday, both the defense and the Queen's Counsel (acting on behalf of the Swedish government) presented their opening arguments. Related ...

Could Text Messages From Accusers Help Clear Assange?

A hidden cache of dozens of text messages between the two women who have accused WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of sexual assault contradict some of what they told police and might clear his name, a U.K. court heard today. Assange's Swedish lawyer, Bjorn Hurtig, a witness during the second day of Assange's extradition hearing, said the texts show the women hoped to be paid, wanted "revenge" and intended to "blast" Assange's reputation by contacting newspapers, The Independent reported. Hurtig said he had seen many texts written by the accuser identified in British court as "Miss W" that ...

WikiLeaks' Julian Assange Fights Extradition in British Court

LONDON -- Julian Assange is back in court Monday to combat his extradition to Sweden. It is the first part of a two-day hearing for the WikiLeaks founder that concludes tomorrow. Assange, who faces allegations of sexual assault in Sweden, has been held under house arrest in Britain since late December. He is wanted for questioning over allegations of rape, molestation and unlawful coercion made by two women in August. He denies the charges. Assange's lawyers are combating extradition on both technical and political grounds. On the technical end, they maintain that the arrest warrant issued ...

Welcome, 2011: Sarah Palin and Julian Assange on the Radar Screen

Ready or not, 2011 is here. Consider some of these upcoming historic milestones as the new year arrives. 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of Jefferson Davis becoming president of the Confederacy, the 70th anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech (actually, his 1941 State of the Union address), the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's first presidential news conference -- and the first ever to be broadcast live on television), and 25 years since the space shuttle Challenger disaster. But 2011 will have its own special history, and here are some of the events that will ...

Keith Olbermann Suspends Twitter Account Over Assange Controversy

(Dec. 16) -- Is Keith Olbermann all tweeted out? The host of MSNBC's "Countdown" said he will suspend his Twitter account today following sustained attacks regarding his coverage of the rape charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Now, going so far as to remove his icon, @keitholbermann is merely an unhatched egg in the microblogging universe. On Tuesday, the MSNBC personality sparked controversy when he and film director Michael Moore, who recently offered $20,000 of his own money to bail out Assange, expressed a "dismissive" attitude over the rape allegations against ...

Julian Assange: 5 People Who Helped Bail Out WikiLeaks' Founder

(Dec. 16) -- Let freedom ring? After spending nine days in a London jail cell over charges of sexual coercion and rape, Julian Assange was freed on $300,000 bail on Thursday. British authorities had sought to keep Assange in prison, but a judge denied that request. Assange, who will soon be heading to the lavish country estate of journalist Vaughan Smith, must surrender his passport and wear an electronic tracking device on his ankle, similar to the variety used by the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. So how did Assange manage to make such a steep bail? Surge Desk has a run-down of ...
