While plenty of people are also questioning Beck's motives, some black conservatives have been outspoken in their support. Alveda King -- Martin Luther King's niece -- will participate in the rally. She recently wrote: "When I join Beck and all gathered at the Lincoln Memorial this weekend, I will talk about my ...
My husband really should have cruised through the exhibit hall at the 139th National Rifle Association annual meeting in Charlotte, N.C., this past weekend. To relax, he'll drive to the Uhwarrie National Forest and spend the afternoon at the flint-lock range, shooting his .45-caliber, black-powder dueling pistol at paper targets. He's been known to mosey down to the trap range and fire off his Mossberg 500 shotgun, just for fun. The 280,000 square feet of exhibits at the NRA meeting -- filled with all kinds of guns, knives and appropriate accessories -- would have entertained him for hours. ...
As was widely reported, Sarah Palin told attendees at a recent fundraising breakfast for the Susan B. Anthony List to watch out for a stampede of "pink elephants" who can "get things done." The former governor of Alaska and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee went on to cite such notable female candidates as Carly Fiorina (running for U.S. Senate in California), former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton of Colorado (also running for the Senate), former state Sen. Sue Lowden of Nevada (likewise) and South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley. Palin has ramped up her efforts in recent weeks to help ...
Ken McKay, chief of staff to embattled Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, has resigned after a tumultuous week that has seen the party embarrassed by a series of gaffes: A nearly $2,000 expenditure at a Los Angeles lesbian-bondage themed club; Steele's hiring of a financial aide who'd been ordered in 2007 to repay nearly $70,000 to two D.C. baseball groups he had chaired; and the departure of a well-regarded top-level fundraiser from Texas. RNC spokesman Doug Heye declined to say if McKay's exit, first reported by Politico, was forced or voluntary. He said replacing McKay ...
Are you ready for some football? The NFL season kicked off Thursday night when Pittsburgh beat Tennessee. With the other teams launching their seasons yesterday and tonight, the time seemed ripe to ask some political insiders and opinion leaders for their predictions about the year ahead. "AIG is Obama's 'Katrina' -- in terms of an example of government's failure -- and the failure of presidential leadership." ... That's according to former Ohio Secretary of State and Family Research Council Senior Fellow Ken Blackwell. Clearly the AIG bonus story has spurred a huge populist backlash -- building on angst which had previously only been manifest during the Santelli rant -- and subsequent tea parties. But anger over the AIG bailout appears to be just now reaching fever pitch, and it is starting to look like the bonus scandal may be laid solely at the feet of Democrats (they are ...
I just spoke with Ken Blackwell, a senior fellow at the American Civil Rights Union and a former Ohio Secretary of State, about Michael Steele's comments to GQ. According to Blackwell:"Chairman Steele, as the leader of America's Pro-Life conservative party, needs to re-read the Bible, the U.S. Constitution, and the 2008 GOP Platform. He then needs to get to work -- or get out of the way."Blackwell ran against Steele for RNC Chairman and his surprise last-minute endorsement of Steele helped propel him to victory.POLL: How Long Before Michael Steele Resigns? ...
Michael Steele's tenure as RNC chair could be over before it really begins, if recent reports are true. Anonymous Republican sources have told 2 different outlets that Steele's ouster may be imminent. First, FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver had this on Monday:According to multiple former high-level RNC staffers familiar with the dynamics involved, Steele is unlikely to survive in the post if favored Republican Jim Tedisco loses his open-seat race to Democrat Scott Murphy. Then, Taegan Goddard's Political Wire had this yesterday:Republican insiders tell Political Wire that a no confidence vote on ...
It has been an exciting day for the RNC chairman race. Mike Duncan, the incumbent chairman, dropped out earlier this afternoon. And now, in a stunning turn of events, Ken Blackwell has endorsed Michael Steele. Update: MI Chair Saul Anuzis dropped out, but did not endorse. It's down to Steele and Dawson.*** Update: Michael Steele wins! ...
