Relatives of Dr. David Sinclair told The Associated Press that they were "blown away" and "honored." So-called "birthers" have questioned Obama's birthplace, espousing theories that he was not born in the U.S., possibly his father's native Kenya, and therefore ineligible to be president. Obama released a short form copy of his birth certificate in 2008. Recently, potential Republican presidential ...
Pirates targeted the American ship Maersk Alabama off the African coast but fled after warning shots were fired, according to reports. A skiff carrying suspected pirates approached the Maersk about 200 miles north of Madagascar on Tuesday, said Wing Cmdr. Paddy O'Kennedy of the EU Naval Force, according to The Associated Press. The pirates didn't shoot, but a security team on the Maersk fired warnings shots and the boat took off. Sayyid Azim / AP The U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama, seen here in 2009 when it was hijacked by pirates, was targeted again this week. "The captain ...
TV and radio host Mike Huckabee is embracing his true inner talker. You can't buy the kind of attention he has attracted in the past week, and just when he's pushing sales of a new book. Huckabee is also trying to stay on the public radar screen as a potential late entry into the 2012 presidential race -- and why not? The former Arkansas governor leads in polls of the nascent Republican field, both nationally and in the key states of Iowa and South Carolina. But there's a price. The further Huckabee goes down the road he's on, the less seriously he's taken as a presidential ...
Mike Huckabee, whose down-home sensibilities helped him in his 2008 bid for the GOP presidential nomination, may be speaking a little too freely these days. First, Huckabee incorrectly said that President Barack Obama spent part of his childhood in Kenya -- he later claimed he meant Indonesia -- and hinted that that put Obama out of touch with the average American. Now, Huckabee is criticizing new Academy Award winner Natalie Portman for being pregnant out of wedlock. On Monday, Huckabee went on Michael Medved's radio show and said, "People see a Natalie Portman who boasts, 'We're not ...
A Kenyan lawmaker with the nickname "rich man" and a penchant for "gangsta-style bling" wants to overhaul parliament's dress code after he was kicked out for wearing diamond earrings and sunglasses to work. Gidion Mbuvi, a flamboyant 35-year-old who represents part of Nairobi, is famous for his flashy style, as well as unproven allegations that he's been a drug dealer. He was thrown out of parliament Tuesday after waltzing into work wearing flashy jewelry and shades. He also drives a Hummer, and his nickname is "Sonko" -- a Swahili term for a rich, ostentatious person. Fellow lawmakers ...
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is flirting with another presidential campaign, asserted on a New York radio program Monday that President Obama grew up in the African country of Kenya, the homeland of his father. Obama's childhood was spent in Hawaii and Indonesia. There is no evidence that he spent any significant time in Kenya, although he wrote in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," that he visited there in 1988 after the senior Obama died in an automobile accident. Huckabee, who hosts a weekly show on Fox News, said on WOR's Steve Malzberg Show that Obama, "having grown up in ...
NAIROBI, Kenya -- Four Americans taken hostage by Somali pirates off East Africa were shot and killed by their captors Tuesday, the U.S. military said, marking the first time U.S. citizens have been killed in a wave of pirate attacks plaguing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean for years. U.S. naval forces who were trailing the Americans' captured yacht with four warships quickly boarded the vessel after hearing the gunfire. They tried to provide lifesaving care to the Americans, but they died of their wounds, U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida said in a ...
Amid reports of atrocities and mass graves, four African leaders arrived in Abidjan today in another attempt to persuade Ivory Coast's tenacious President Laurent Gbagbo to step down. Gbagbo has refused to concede to opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, whose victory in the November presidential election has been recognized by the international community. "This second round of talks is supposed to be the last chance for Gbagbo, but nothing is certain," Rinaldo Depagne, a senior analyst for the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, told AOL News today. Sunday Alamba, AP Four ...
HONOLULU -- President Barack Obama is quietly but strategically stepping up his outreach to Africa, using this year to increase his engagement with a continent that is personally meaningful to him and important to U.S. interests. Expectations in Africa spiked after the election of an American president with a Kenyan father. But midway through his term, Obama's agenda for Africa has taken a backseat to other foreign policy goals, such as winding down the Iraq war, fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and resetting relations with Russia. Obama aides believe those issues are now on more solid ...
(Dec. 15) -- The International Criminal Court's lead prosecutor said today he wants top Kenyan officials, including the country's deputy prime minister, charged with crimes against humanity for the bloody chaos that followed the 2007 election. The allegations include murder, persecution and rape committed during the widespread violence. At a news conference today in the Hague, Netherlands, ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo asked judges to charge six men, including Kenya's former police commissioner, its former higher education minister and a prominent radio talk show host. They are accused ...
