Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! With Republican opposition melting away, the Senate unanimously confirmed retired Air Force Gen. James Clapper as the nation's fourth director of National Intelligence. Clapper succeeds Dennis Blair, who resigned in May amid differences with the White House over the scope of his authority, CNN said. Clapper, currently the Defense Department's top intelligence officer, will oversee 16 spy agencies. Three Republican senators, John McCain of Arizona, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Kit Bond of Missouri, had held up the vote, demanding information from the White House not directly related to Clapper. ...
There is no question that Elena Kagan will be easily confirmed by the Senate this week to join the U.S. Supreme Court. But in recent days, Kagan has lost a handful of key votes from both sides of the aisle that Sonia Sotomayor secured during her confirmation process a year ago. Several moderate senators say Kagan's limited courtroom experience makes her too much of an unknown to support. When the Senate voted 68 to 31 to confirm Sotomayor in 2009, every Democrat and nine Republicans backed her, while 31 GOP senators voted no. Among the nine Republicans who supported Sotomayor were Sens. ...
WASHINGTON (July 27) -- Operatives inside Afghanistan and Pakistan who have worked for the U.S. against the Taliban or al-Qaida may be at risk following the disclosure of thousands of once-secret U.S. military documents, former and current officials said. As the Obama administration scrambles to repair any political damage to the war effort in Congress and among the American public by the WikiLeaks revelations, there are also growing concerns that some U.S. allies abroad may ask whether they can trust America to keep secrets, officials said. Speaking in the Rose Garden Tuesday, President ...
President Obama's top counterterrorism adviser today defended the administration's decision to put the Nigerian man who tried to bomb a Detroit-bomb airplane on trial in a criminal court rather than charge charge him as an enemy combatant given his ties to an al Qaeda group based in Yemen. ...
Congressional Republicans, led by House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), came out swinging against President Barack Obama's apparent new-found willingness to entertain the possibility of prosecuting former Bush Administration officials for decisions made regarding enhanced interrogations. Hoekstra (R-MI), penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal declaring that if Democrats wanted to conduct an investigation, Republicans would make sure Congressional Democrats were the subjects of the probe right along with the Bush Administration."[L]ast week Mr. Obama overruled ...
My colleague, Caleb Howe, wrote a piece yesterday about Keith Olbermann and Howard Dean discussing Senator Kit Bond. He got pretty worked up, even made a YouTube video.I've struggled with this since then, because Caleb is my friend, my best friend. See, when he told me about this story, it just didn't seem right. So, I called Countdown, to check on the facts of the story. I decided to bury what they told me, not even telling Caleb about it. However, my conscience will not allow me to hide the truth, and somebody's bound to find out about this, anyway. So, here is the audio from my call to ...
The Hill newspaper asked 97 Senators this question: "If you were asked, would you accept an offer to be the VP nominee?" This sounds like a pretty simple question. Vice POTUS is probably the best job you can get without having to do anything to earn it. But these Senators act like they've been posed some mystical Zen koan, along the lines of the job interview trump card, "What's your biggest weakness?" (I care too much) I'm not going to list all 97, but I encourage you to, and pick out your own favorites. Instead, I am going to hand out hypothetical trophies to a few of the most deserving ...
