Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! When artist Andrew Myers makes a painting, the subjects of his portraits get screwed -- literally. That's because Myers, a sculptor based in Laguna Beach, Calif., is, so far, the world's only proponent of "screw art," and he turns screws into three-dimensional portraits of his subjects. Myers didn't start out being a screwy sculptor, but, you know the drill, once he saw the concept in his mind's eye, he decided to see if if he could nail it for real. "I liked the ideas of using screws because of the industrial aspect and the harshness that comes with using it as a material," Myers told AOL ...
LOS ANGELES -- California residents who endured flooding, mudslides and evacuations during a weeklong onslaught of rain now have another problem: contaminated water and fouled beaches. The rain washed trash, pesticides and bacteria into waterways, prompting health warnings. Four beaches were closed in Northern California's San Mateo County and another 12 miles of beach from Laguna Beach to San Clemente in Southern California's Orange County were off-limits because of sewer overflows. It has been one of those weeks in California. A week of heavy rain, snow and mudslides has left behind a mess of epic proportions in the Golden State. Here are just a few of the highlights from the storm's wrath so far: Blaming mudslides, Amtrak suspended service between San Diego and San Juan Capistrano today. Its key finding is that crime seemed to rise in Laguna Beach, Calif., precisely because "Laguna Beach" was filmed there. Lesley Chiou and Mary Lopez authored the study. (The briefest of abstracts can be found here.) They're assistant professors of economics at Occidental College in L.A. -- and, yes, admit to ...
The flurry of posts by my female colleagues on movies and TV shows has gone Right. Over. My. Head. I have never heard of this Julie-whatever movie they are debating. What's the big whoop? And although I've seen a couple episodes of "Mad Men," I think the show is boring and unwatchable. I'm way out of my league trying to debate these TV shows that -- let's be frank -- don't have a chance in heck of being on the cover of Us Weekly. So really, why watch? Go ahead and call me superficial, low-brow, cheesy, trashy, shallow and unsophisticated; I accept all those descriptions. So I'm ...
