Obama in Brazil, Balancing Latin American Swing With Libyan Crisis

President Obama, balancing the crisis in Libya with a long-planned trip to Latin America, arrived in Brazil Saturday at the outset of a three-country swing aimed at strengthening the nation's economic relationship with its neighbors and improving regional security. "As we respond to these immediate crises abroad, we also will not let up in our efforts to tackle the pressing, ongoing challenges facing our country, including accelerating economic growth," Obama said in his weekly address before departing. UN Declares 2011 the 'International Year of Forests'

UNITED NATIONS -- Some 380 million years after the first trees grew on Earth, the United Nations today declared 2011 to be the "International Year of Forests," saying that forests and the 1.6 billion people who depend on them for their livelihood need to be protected. "Each minute that we spend on this planet breathing in and breathing out, about 25 hectares [62 acres] of forests are lost," Joseph Deiss, president of the U.N. General Assembly, said at the global launch of the event. "Ultimately, as history reminds us, in the past, entire civilizations collapse due to deforestation." There ...

Chavez's Anti-US Imperialism Tour Rolls On

(Oct. 21) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has arrived in Syria for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, the latest stop on a foreign tour intended to counter what he calls U.S. "imperialism." Chavez flew to Damascus on Wednesday night after a two-day visit to Iran. During his stay in the Islamic Republic, the leftist leader signed 11 energy and trade agreements that will bolster cooperation between the two OPEC members, including a deal to establish a joint Iranian-Venezuelan oil shipping company, Iran's state-run Press TV noted. The outspoken leftist leader also ...

Pinera Reshuffles Latin America's Political Deck

(Oct. 20) -- Only a decade ago the scene would have been unimaginable: a Chilean miner -- an icon of the political left -- hugging a right-wing politician once tarred for his ties to a cruel dictatorship. But there it was, the 10-second hug between the billionaire Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and Luis Urzua, the miners' foreman, replete with firm and heartfelt back slaps. If viewers were rapt worldwide, Chileans were transfixed. A number of political preconceptions seemed to fall like scales in the dramatic rescue of the 33 miners from the San Jose mine. Pinera, long suspected of ...

Opinion: Where Did the Jobs -- and Little Red Wagons -- Go?

(Oct. 15) -- Etch A Sketch by the Ohio Art Co. is made in China. Radio Flyer red wagons: made in China. Levi's: made in Latin America and Asia. When these and other American icons left the country, so did millions of jobs. Many of the more than 5 million manufacturing jobs and 600,000 information-sector jobs that have vanished in the past 10 years have been outsourced overseas. Outsourcing -- chasing low wages and lax regulation by shipping American jobs to other countries -- has been very good for the corporate bottom line and very bad for people who work for a living. While 27 million ...

Joel Barry Pollak: Why You Should Vote for Me

Joel Barry Pollak: Why You Should Vote for Me

We have a clear choice in this election. We can choose a government of high deficits, high taxes and high unemployment. Or we can put jobs first, cut wasteful spending and get back to the basics that built our economy. We can keep acting like our enemies are our friends, and treating friends like enemies. Or we can stand up for human rights and democracy, and against terrorism and tyranny. We can continue on the radical path to socialized medicine, where government control is more important than saving lives. Or we can repeal Obamacare and start over with real, sustainable insurance ...

Argentina Is the Real 'Latin American Tiger,' Not Brazil

Argentina Is the Real 'Latin American Tiger,' Not Brazil

(Sept. 23) -- Who's king of the jungle? The Washington Post ran an article this week touting Brazil as a Latin American tiger due to its fast-growing economy. The "tiger" moniker, of course, being a common metaphor employed to describe national economic prosperity -- for instance, the rapid growth of Asian countries such as South Korea and Taiwan beginning in the 1960s. A world away, Brazil is "rapidly becoming one of the more important investors in Latin America and is making its presence felt as far away as the United States, Africa and Europe," writes the Post's Juan Ferero. But the ...

Chilly in Chile: South America Hit by Cold Snap

Chilly in Chile: South America Hit by Cold Snap

(Aug. 6) -- The U.S. might be experiencing a hot, hot summer, but south of the border, things couldn't be more different. Latin America's southernmost regions are shivering through the coldest winter in decades, which has left vast swaths of Argentina and Brazil with snow, and caused millions of freshwater fish to freeze to death in Bolivia. To get an idea of how unusual this icy snap is, you just have to take a look at the weather records of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires. It's snowed there three times since 1918 -- and two of those dustings have taken place in the past month. (The other ...

Colombian Cocaine Commander Sentenced to 27 Years

(July 22) -- A federal judge in Washington, D.C., sentenced a top commander in Colombia's leftist FARC group to 27 years in prison today for conspiring to smuggle tons of cocaine into the U.S. He pleaded guilty to the charges in December. Gerardo Aguilar Ramirez -- also known as "Cesar" -- was a front commander with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC, according to a statement released by federal prosecutors. As commander of one of the FARC's 77 fronts, he was responsible for all of the unit's criminal activities. The FARC is the source of two-thirds of the cocaine ...

Argentina, Uganda and the Future of Conservative Christianity

Argentina, Uganda and the Future of Conservative Christianity

(July 15) -- Argentina, a predominately Catholic nation, became on Thursday the first Latin American country to grant homosexuals the full legal rights enjoyed by other citizens. The bill was opposed by Catholic and evangelical authorities. One of its opponents, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, said that "children need to have the right to be raised and educated by a father and a mother." Increasingly, Catholic Latin America is granting legal rights to gays and lesbians that the church opposes. "Same-sex civil unions have been legalized in Uruguay and some states in Mexico and Brazil," The New ...
