DENVER -- A Colorado man can sue two Secret Service agents who arrested him after he touched former Vice President Dick Cheney on the arm in 2006 and told him his Iraq War policies were "disgusting," a federal appeals court ruled Monday. The ruling means Steven Howards can try to subpoena Cheney to testify about the incident, said David Lane, Howards' attorney. "I fully intend on deposing the former vice president," Lane told The Associated Press. Doesn't matter which side of the budget battleground you stick your rhetorical bayonet in, one thing we can all agree on is ... our government is broke. Broke. Broke. Broke. Broke. Broke. Broke. Broke. Stone broke. Like a ceramic pocket watch in a gravel blender broke. Destitute. Down and out. Indigent. Flat busted. Hard up. Cleaned out. On the skids. Short of currency. Devoid of money. Insufficient funds. Negative cash flow. Penniless. Pauperized. Poverty stricken. Impecunious. Decidedly unprosperous. Financially strapped. Insolvent. Not currently considering any luxury acquisitions like ...
(July 13) -- Mark Zuckerberg and Paul D. Ceglia probably won't stay "friends" for long. That's because Ceglia is suing the Facebook creator for an 84 percent share in the social networking company, according to The Wall Street Journal. The lawsuit, which was brought in the Supreme Court of New York's Allegany County, claims Zuckerberg contracted with Ceglia on April 28, 2003, to design and develop a website. According to Ceglia, the two parties agreed upon $1,000 and a 50 percent stake in the company for Ceglia's work, plus one additional percentage share for every day of development on the ...
There's bad news on several fronts for BP this morning. First -- and here the concern is more for the environment -- new estimates indicate the size of the Gulf oil spill is much greater than previously believed, with the capped (but not really) well gushing 20,000 to 40,000 barrels a day. The new calculation indicates "that an amount equivalent to the Exxon Valdez disaster could be flowing into the Gulf of Mexico every 8 to 10 days," as the New York Times puts it. Meanwhile, lawsuits against BP are pouring in. There have already been 200 filed -- including death and injury claims for rig ...
(June 8) -- Imagine what would happen if all the warning labels disappeared from our everyday lives. Would the world come to an end, in chaos, with a torrent of lost limbs and explosions? Or would ordinary common sense take over? After 13 years as host of the annual Wacky Warning Labels Contest, I can testify that there are more labels than ever -- on everything you can possibly imagine, and on some things you can't. This year's 2010 Wacky Warning Labels Contest finalists tell the tale. We'll be picking the "winners" in a nationally televised poll later this month, but the finalist list ...
Rapper, mogul, all around cool dude Jay-Z has been spotted and photographed wearing a Yankees cap many times during his life, and taken in his fair share of games at Yankee Stadium, so it's safe to assume the New York-born entertainer is a Yankees fan. Now it seems he's taking his Yankees fandom to another level, as he has filed a lawsuit against Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz. It seems that Ortiz owns a nightclub in the Dominican Republic called Forty/Forty. Jay-Z owns, amongst many other things, a few nightclubs named 40/40. They're located in New York, Atlantic City and Las ...
(Jan. 15) -- The Foundation for Fair Civil Justice each year releases its annual Wacky Warnings Award. My personal all-time favorite was the stroller that warns: "Remove child before folding." Another is an iron label that warns the user to not use it on clothes that are currently being worn. I was reminded of this when I read the recent news that San Francisco's mayor and a lawmaker in Maine want to require labels on cell phones warning users about the risk of brain cancer -- despite the lack of any credible evidence that such a link exists. It would be one thing if these warnings were mere ...
With all the pushing and shoving going on with health care reform, there's very little attention being paid to tort reform. Malpractice lawsuits always are near the top of any medical provider's tale of woe. It's a shame it's not as controversial, so far, as the many other facets of health care reform. The screamers would REALLY enjoy yelling at some lawyers. ...
John McCain's campaign has filed a lawsuit against the Virginia Board of Elections, asking that the absentee ballots of overseas military personnel be counted - even if they don't arrive here in the U.S. until after the Nov. 4 deadline.CNN is reporting this evening the McCain campaign wants Virginia - a state that the Republican candidate has to win - to accept absentee ballots up until Nov. 14.
