Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The U.S. Army ordered a "psychological operations" team to manipulate visiting U.S. senators into pushing for more funding and troops for the war in Afghanistan, according to a report in Rolling Stone magazine. Three-star U.S. general Lt. Gen. William Caldwell is accused of deploying propaganda techniques, which the Army says are intended to "alter the behavior of foreign populations," against visiting U.S. dignitaries to Afghanistan in a potentially illegal, months-long operation to lobby Congress. Caldwell is responsible for the training of Afghan security forces. Gen. David Petraeus, the ...
Three lawmakers have been cleared in a fund-raising complaint that sought to link their votes on the Wall Street reform bill to political contributions. The House ethics committee said the activities of Reps. John Campbell (R-Calif.) Tom Price (R-Ga.) and Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) "raised no appearance of impropriety . . . Nor did they violate any law or other applicable standards of conduct with their fundraising." The complaint against them involved fundraising in December 2009 as Wall Street lobbyists and executives opposed to tighter regulations on investment banks made the rounds in advance ...
Is there life after Congress? Dozens of House and Senate members -- whether booted out by voters or bowing out by choice -- have grappled with that ominous question for weeks. And who better to offer guidance -- and perhaps even identity crisis intervention -- than lawmakers who previously walked those same halls of power? I loves me some mama grizzly Sarah Palin and her adorable Republican bear cubs running for national office -- Delaware's Christine "Never Mind What I Said Back Then" O'Donnell, South Dakota's Kristi "I Forgot My Court Date" Noem and Nevada's Sharron "Unemployed People Are Spoiled" Angle. And no, I don't love them because they're "unelectable." If you said that, bite your tongue. MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews bet Politics Daily's own David Corn that O'Donnell will win in November. Maybe that's a fake-out, but at this point in American politics, the fake is real, the real is fake, and the law of ...
Republican lobbyists, consultants, and contractors are polishing their resumes, expecting their job prospects to turn around as more polls point to GOP wins in the November elections. The New York Times reported Thursday that some lobbying firms, trade groups and corporations are already seeking to hire more Republicans "to bolster their political fortunes." And salaries for Republicans in the private sector have risen "significantly" over the last few weeks, according to headhunters. "We're seeing a premium for Republicans," Ivan H. Adler, a lobbyist for the McCormick Group in ...

The top 25 firms grossed $227.5 million in the first six months of 2010, Roll Call reported Wednesday. Four of the five biggest K Street companies reported double-digit gains. They were led by Patton Boggs, which saw a 12.4 percent increase over the same period last year, with $20.8 million in revenue. Patton Boggs was followed by Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and Van Scoyoc Associates, both of which reported their bottom lines were way up, according ...
WASHINGTON (June 4) -- Getting back its good name may be a whole lot tougher for BP than capping the oil gusher fouling the Gulf of Mexico. But no one can say the energy giant isn't enlisting enough of this city's heavy hitters to help salvage its reputation. The company has hired Purple Strategies, a bipartisan consulting firm that offers "strategic counseling, positioning, communications and public affairs" with a "complete fusion of red and blue perspectives that companies ... need to succeed socially, politically and economically." The image shop is run by Republican Alex Castellanos, a ...
