(Nov. 17) -- Add "drunken driving" to the criteria for de-friending on National Unfriend Day. Southern California's Huntington Beach Police Department is considering public shaming on Facebook as a strategy for combating drunken drivers. The Orange County city had 274 alcohol-related collisions and 1,687 drunken driving arrests last year alone, ranking it among California's most drunken-driver-addled urban areas, according to a July report cited by the Los Angeles Times. For Councilman Devin Dwyer, it's a classic case of new technology taking up the services formerly provided by old media. ...

A total of 18 students aboard the bus were taken to hospitals with noncritical injuries, police said. "The scene is still active," Los Angeles police Sgt. Andrew Rea told Surge Desk at 5:15 p.m. local time. The bus was carrying 54 students from Roosevelt High School, who were returning from the East Los Angeles Skills Center, KFSN ABC 30 reported. Sponsored Links Police were investigating the wreck, but passengers ...
CHICAGO (Oct. 22) -- Tribune Co. CEO Randy Michaels has resigned amid a backlash to reports of raunchy behavior at the media company. Friday's resignation ends Michaels' 10-month reign as CEO. His departure lets the troubled media company focus on emerging from bankruptcy protection instead of dealing with the perception that its leader had fostered the sexist culture of a "frat house." Tribune owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and 19 TV stations. It is preparing to file its latest plan to end a nearly two-year stint under bankruptcy protection. Last week, one of his top ...
(Oct. 21) -- DVD-by-mail is officially going the way of Saturday evenings spent perusing the video rental shelves. For the first time in its history, movie rental giant Netflix is providing more hours of content via Internet streaming than on DVDs, according to the Los Angeles Times blog Company Town. Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings raised the point during his remarks discussing third-quarter results. "By every measure we are now primarily a streaming company that also offers DVD-by-mail," Hastings said. "DVD-by-mail shipments are still growing, but streaming for us is much larger and ...
(Oct. 19) -- The mayor of San Gabriel, Calif., resigned on Tuesday after being arrested for an alleged instance of purse-snatching, among other crimes. "The unwanted media attention from this private occurrence has greatly affected my family," Albert Y.M. Huang said at a news conference at which he announced his resignation. "It's a tough decision we, as elected officials, have to make." Huang's troubles started around 1 a.m. Friday, when Huang got into an argument with a former girlfriend at New Taste Dumpling House in San Gabriel, the Los Angeles Times reported. After the woman, whose ...
(Aug. 30) -- The literary world may be flush with excitement that J.D. Salinger's toilet is up for sale for a whopping $1 million, but celebrity memorabilia experts say that's a crappy price for something of little historical value. According to the Los Angeles Times, Salinger's toilet is being auctioned on eBay by a person who purchased it from a couple that bought his house in Cornish, N.H., after his death in January at the age of 91. The widow of the famed "Catcher in the Rye" author sold the house shortly after his death, and the new owners decided to dump the toilet and get a new one, ...
(Aug. 27) -- There's no rewind button for Blockbuster. According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, sources close to Blockbuster Inc., the formerly dominant home video rental outlet, are indicating that the company will file for a "preplanned" September bankruptcy claim. "Preplanned," of course, suggests a certain level of inevitability and expectation to the news. But how avoidable was the big blue ticket stub's fate, and just where does Blockbuster stand now? Surge Desk answers these questions, offering the four key points to know about the Blockbuster bankruptcy. How bad is ...
(July 1) -- Welfare recipients in California will have fewer places to get relief, now that strip bars are being stripped off the list. Since 2007, it's been possible to cash the checks -- meant to feed and clothe needy families -- from ATMs at strip clubs across the state, including such well-known gentlemen's cabarets as Sam's Hofbrau, Seventh Veil and Star Strip. More than $12,000 from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program was dispensed from the start of 2007 to the end of 2009 at various California strip bars, casinos and state-licensed poker rooms, according to officials ...
(April 27) -- An event calling on North Americans to draw the Islamic prophet Muhammad is not only drawing controversy, it's also drawing in participants -- even as the organizers drop out of the picture. After hearing about the threats made against "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker by Muslim activists for a recent episode depicting Muhammad in a bear costume to spoof the Islam rule that he never be drawn, Seattle cartoonist Molly Norris decided to take action.
