UK Crime Map Crashes After Getting 18 Million Hits an Hour

A British website showing block-by-block crime statistics crashed within a few hours of going online today after public interest overwhelmed servers. The site, police.uk, crashed after receiving as many as 300,000 hits a minute, or 18 million an hour, The Press Association reported. "Most popular gov website ever?" the British Home Office wrote on Twitter. "Demand for new #crime maps at around 300k a minute, equivalent to 18m hits an hr. Working hard to make sure everyone can access." The site is intended to allow people to gauge levels of crime and police activity in neighborhoods in ...

'South Sudan' Could Be Latest Change to Map of Africa

With initial results showing that nearly 99 percent of southern Sudanese have voted to secede from their country's Arab north, officials readying for the birth of their new nation have a dilemma on their hands: What to call it? A steering committee of southern officials -- many of them from former rebel groups vying for power in a new era of independence -- has been formed to juggle all the issues associated with forming a new country, including choosing a name, flag and national anthem. One of those officials, information minister Benjamin Marial, told The New York Times that more than a ...

Opinion: Could This Be the Map to Mideast Peace?

It's a cliche among foreign policy circles that everyone knows what an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement will look like. Now a Washington think tank with close connections to officials in both Israel and the United States has sketched out realistic borders for a new Palestinian state. On Thursday, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy published a series of maps showing detailed options for removing most of the West Bank from Israeli occupation. While Robert Satloff, the think tank's executive director, and David Makovsky, the author of the study, said they were not endorsing any one ...

Vanuatu Recieves Negative Vibrations From 7.2 Earthquake

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the tiny South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu early Friday morning local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was located 300 miles north of Port Vila, Vanuatu's capital city, and 1,290 miles northeast of Australia, as depicted on the following USGS map: Although there have been no reports of casualties or extensive damage thus far, the quake did briefly prompt a tsunami warning for many of the nearby island countries to the north of Australia, including the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia. It has since been called off, reports ...

Acceptance of Medical Marijuana Grows

(Jan. 25) -- New Jersey is the latest state to legalize medical marijuana, continuing a trend that began on the West Coast 14 years ago. Fourteen states have agreed to let doctors prescribe pot to treat certain ailments since California got things rolling in 1996. The law outgoing New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine signed on Jan. 18 takes effect in six months. New York, Illinois and Maryland are among the states considering medical marijuana. The District of Columbia is on the verge of allowing it. And in neighboring Virginia, state Delegate Harvey B. Morgan, a 79-year-old Republican, has raised ...

Where We Are As Of Today: The VP Effects

Less than two months out from the 2008 election, it's time to take a look at our present situation. The last major factor in both campaigns was the selection of VP nominations. In the week since McCain evoked the Palin Effect, his numbers have leapt upward and his re-energized campaign has geared up into overdrive. Obama also nominated someone to be his running mate, which added no spark whatsoever to his somewhat flagging, post-climactic campaign. With a turn toward the negative on both sides as they attempt to gain momentum in the ramp up to the debates, the campaigns find themselves in a ...
