Opinion: Time for Tea Party Leaders to Act on Racism

Opinion: Time for Tea Party Leaders to Act on Racism

(Aug. 11) -- Will we ever have frank, mature discussions about race and racism in this country? I'd like to think so, but with each passing day, I grow less hopeful. More times than not, when matters regarding bigotry and discrimination are reported on, the discussion is marred in rhetoric designed to evoke emotion rather than provoke any meaningful thought. Look no further than the cries of black tea party members who denounce claims that the movement they pledge allegiance to is a hotbed for racists. As they gathered last week in Washington for a news conference, Lloyd Marcus, a spokesman ...

Tea Party Express Unveils TV Ads Hitting 'Liberal Lisa Murkowski'

The Tea Party Express -- the controversial group that recently ousted leader Mark Williams but was also instrumental in helping Sharron Angle win the Nevada GOP primary, and in helping persuade Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) to retire from Congress -- is back. This time, the group is focusing on helping conservative Fairbanks, Alaska, attorney Joe Miller oust moderate Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The group has been running radio ads in the state and recently unveiled new TV ads. Tea Party Express officials have said they will spend "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to take out Murkowski. ...

Idaho's Walt Minnick Rejects Tea Party Backing in Wake of Divisive Blog

Idaho's Walt Minnick Rejects Tea Party Backing in Wake of Divisive Blog

Rep. Walt Minnick (D-Idaho) is in a class by himself. He's the only Democratic candidate to be endorsed by the Tea Party Express. But it's a distinction Minnick has rejected, telling the conservative group he no longer wants its backing after a controversial blog post by Tea Party Express leader Mark Williams made the rounds over the weekend. The post, since removed, was an allegedly satirical letter to Abraham Lincoln saying, "We Coloreds have taken a vote and decided that we don't cotton to that whole emancipation thing." The letter was repudiated from the left and the right, and Williams ...

Who's in Charge of the Tea Party Movement?

Who's in Charge of the Tea Party Movement?

(July 19) -- Over the weekend, the National Tea Party Federation officially severed ties with the Tea Party Express over a war of words between Mark Williams, a spokesman for the latter group, and the NAACP. At issue was a letter Williams had posted on his website that mocked the NAACP in terms that many readers found to be racist. On its website, the National Tea Party Federation issued a warning to the Tea Party Express on Saturday, demanding that it take the following actions: 1. Mark Williams must be officially removed from the ranks of the Tea Party Express. 2. Notice of Mark Williams' ...

Tea Party Express Leader Ousted Over Letter

Tea Party Express Leader Ousted Over Letter

(July 18) -- Vice President Joseph Biden said that neither he nor President Barack Obama believes the Tea Party is a "racist organization" but that there were clearly some "elements" of the movement that harbored such views. The issue of racism and the Tea Party has hit the headlines recently following a resolution passed by the NAACP calling on Americans to "repudiate the racism of the Tea Party." The St. Louis Tea Party passed its own resolution in response accusing the civil rights group of "hypocritically engaging in the very conduct it purports to oppose" while other movement spokesmen ...

Tea Party Not a 'Racist Organization,' Biden Says

Vice President Joseph Biden said that neither he nor President Obama believes the Tea Party is a "racist organization" but that there were clearly some "elements" of the movement that harbored such views. David Webb of the National Tea Party Federation acknowledged on CBS' Face the Nation that there were "fringe elements" in the movement but emphasized that quick action has been taken against those who step over the line on race. "We, in the last 24 hours, have expelled Tea Party Express and Mark Williams from the National Tea Party Federation because of the letter that he wrote which he, I ...

NAACP Cites Tea Party Blog Post as Further Proof of Racism

(July 16) -- The war of words between the NAACP and members of the tea party movement is not dying down. After the venerable civil rights organization passed a formal resolution "to condemn extremist elements within the tea party, calling on tea party leaders to repudiate those in their ranks who use racist language in their signs and speeches," a spokesman for the anti-taxation grass-roots group fired off a retaliatory, mocking blog post. Conservative radio host Mark Williams, a frequent spokesman for the Tea Party Express, posted a satirical letter from NAACP President Benjamin Jealous ...

Tea Party vs. NAACP, Part 2: Much Heat, Very Little Light

Tea Party vs. NAACP, Part 2: Much Heat, Very Little Light

All the Tea Party had to do in the face of an NAACP resolution calling for leaders to denounce racist elements on its fringe was say: "Sure. Racism has no place in the group." But that's not the way it's turning out. "You're dealing with people who are professional race baiters, who make a very good living off this kind of thing, " Mark Williams of Tea Party Express said on NPR's Morning Edition. "They make more money off of race than any slave trader ever. It's time groups like the NAACP went to the trash heap of history where they belong with all the other vile racist groups that emerged ...
