Authorities confirmed on Thursday they had found the body of 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes, who vanished late last year while visiting her older half-siblings in Baltimore for the holidays. Her body was pulled from the Susquehanna River after authorities and volunteers had searched for weeks. Plane With First Lady Came Too Close to Cargo Jet

WASHINGTON -- Air traffic controllers directed a plane carrying first lady Michelle Obama to abort a landing at Andrews Air Force Base because it was too close to a military cargo jet, officials said Tuesday, in yet another embarrassment for the Federal Aviation Administration. While there apparently was little risk to Mrs. Obama, the episode puts the FAA back into the spotlight as officials struggle to calm public jitters about flying that have been raised by nine suspensions of air traffic controllers and supervisors around the country in recent weeks, including five for sleeping on the ...

Maryland DUI Suspect Drives Truck Onto Police Cruiser

Just because you have an off-road vehicle doesn't mean you hold a license to drive wherever you please. Witnesses told police that Brian Head, a 26-year-old from Maryland, found himself a bit stranded early Sunday morning after a bar fight turned into a car chase that left him -- and his pickup truck -- perched on the hood of an unmarked police car. Head allegedly took the wheel of his Ford F-250 intending to pursue someone he had just been in an argument with at a tavern when he collided with his adversary's Volkswagen, MSNBC reports. ...

Swollen Waterways Worry Officials on East Coast

TRENTON, N.J. - Hundreds of flood-weary East Coast residents were returning home Saturday, as rain-swollen rivers and other waterways were slowly receding to normal levels. But officials say it might be a few more days before some people - especially those in hard-hit areas of northern New Jersey - will be able to get back home. And others may need to be evacuated if some major regional waterways crest as expected on Sunday morning. "This is not a game. This is real. If you can, please seek higher ground now," Paterson Mayor Jeffery Jones told residents on Saturday, warning them that it ...

Slaves Hid African Talismans at Maryland Plantation

The greenhouse built on a storied Maryland plantation where Frederick Douglass once lived as a boy has long been celebrated as a shining example of European-style architecture. But the slaves who built it left their mark on the greenhouse as well, hiding African talismans in the structure to defend against evil spirits. The talismans were found at the Wye House Farm on Maryland's Eastern Shore, unearthed as part of a years-long dig by University of Maryland researchers that has found remarkable traces of the lives of the hundreds of slaves who once worked the plantation in ...
