One of Andrew Cuomo's first acts after his inauguration as New York's governor was also one of the least-noticed, even though it could have sparked a serious controversy for the rising Democratic star -- he went to Mass and received communion. The problem with that, as conservative Catholic activists and some bishops see it, is that Cuomo is pro-choice and divorced, and he backs gay marriage. And if that weren't enough, he attended the Jan. 2 Mass with his live-in girlfriend, Sandra Lee, the Food Network host, who is also Catholic and divorced. Just supporting abortion rights has in the ...
Hundreds of people may have been exposed to hepatitis A when they received Christmas Day communion at a Catholic church on New York's Long Island. Nassau County Health Department officials say anyone who attended the 10:30 a.m. or noon services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa on Dec. 25 may have been exposed to the virus, which is not as dangerous as hepatitis B or C but can cause severe flu-like symptoms. Officials won't release the name of the person who tested positive for the virus, but they say it was a clergy member. They are offering vaccines to people who attended the two ...
VAN, Turkey (Sept. 17) -- For the first time in nearly a century, Turkey will allow a Mass at a 10th-century Armenian Orthodox cathedral in eastern Turkey, but the state's failure to restore a cross atop the building has soured the occasion for many Armenians. Some 5,000 members of the Armenian diaspora are expected to descend upon tiny Akdamar Island on Lake Van for Sunday's Mass. The Turkish government has portrayed the event as a gesture of religious tolerance and rapprochement with Armenia, which is at odds with Turkey over the classification of massacres carried out by Ottoman forces in ...
Passover begins this week, followed quickly by Easter. As a former Catholic married to a Jew, I hate this time of year. It reminds me -- once again -- of just how unresolved my husband and I are about the status of religion within our family. This is not a new issue for us. My husband and I have periodically mulled it over ever since we took an interfaith workshop titled "I'm Jewish; You're Not" at a University Hillel 12 years ago. By mutual agreement, we ruled out Christianity early on. But we've still never managed to come to any closure on the Judaism part of the equation. Sure, we've had ...
Of the religious dimensions at play in Iraq, one of the least assuming is the role of the tiny Christian minority. In sharp decline due to an exodus over the past decade, the Christian community comprise only 2% (636,000 souls) of Iraq's total population. However, this ancient Christian presence continues to reveal a steadfast (or stubborn) resolve to remain in Iraq. While they continue to suffer brutal persecution from some sources (see here, here and here), there are continuing signs of hope for progress and stability (see Eric Schulzke's previous post on Muslims and Christians working ...
