Congress Measure Against Wolves Seen as Precedent

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The White House is poised to accept a budget bill that includes an unprecedented end-run around Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in five Western states - the first time Congress has targeted a species protected under the 37-year-old law. Lawmakers describe the provision in the spending bill as a necessary intervention in a wildlife dilemma that some say has spun out of control. Sixty-six wolves were reintroduced to the Northern Rockies from Canada in the mid-1990s; there are now at least 1,650. AFP / Getty Images The White House is expected to ...

Opinion: Obamacare Is Already Falling Apart

Last week, the House of Representatives voted by a wide margin -- 245 to 189 -- to repeal the president's landmark health reform package. It's unclear whether Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will bring the measure up in the upper body. But even he doesn't, the law is already showing signs of serious trouble. AOL News Debate: Repeal Health Care Reform? No: The Costs of Repeal Are Far Too High -- Ron Pollack, Families USA Yes: Obamacare Is Already Falling Apart -- Sally C. Congressional Office Cuts: A Dog and Pony Show -- Damaging to Oversight

Congressional Office Cuts: A Dog and Pony Show -- Damaging to Oversight

Shortly after taking over as speaker of the House, John Boehner moved to enact a campaign pledge: trimming five percent from congressional office budgets, saving taxpayers around $35 million a year. Not to be outdone in deficit cutting zeal, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers singled out his panel to take an even greater cut -- 9 percent. The measure, introduced by California Republican Rep. Dan Lungren, passed 410-13, with more than 177 Democrats joining a united Republican front. "The one and only mandate we received from the American people in November was to put our ...

Why Dana Milbank Is Right (and Paul Krugman Is Wrong)

Why Dana Milbank Is Right (and Paul Krugman Is Wrong)

I don't usually bother looking at Paul Krugman's columns at the New York Times, but a recent post of his -- attacking the Washington Post's Dana Milbank -- deserves a closer look. Krugman, it seems, is livid at Milbank's assertion that during the health care debate, President Obama "acceded too easily to the wishes of Hill Democrats, allowing them to slow the legislation and engage in a protracted debate on the public option." (Milbank, of course, is just a conservative hack out to make liberals look bad. In fact, he's so conservative that he spent the last year of his life writing a book ...

Obama Says South Korea Trade Pact Will Create Thousands of US Jobs

WASHINGTON (Dec. 4) - President Barack Obama on Saturday praised a newly sealed trade deal with South Korea as a landmark agreement that promises to boost the domestic auto industry and support tens of thousands of American jobs. "This agreement shows the U.S. is willing to lead and compete in the global economy," the president told reporters at the White House, calling it a triumph for American workers in fields from farming to aerospace. The pact, which requires congressional approval, would be the largest since the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico in 1994. Obama ...

Senate Plans Weekend Votes on Democratic Tax Plans

Senate Plans Weekend Votes on Democratic Tax Plans

WASHINGTON (Dec. 3) - A deal to extend expiring tax cuts for all taxpayers is starting to take shape even as Senate Democrats plan weekend votes on bills that would let the tax cuts for the wealthy die. The White House is seeking to expand the tax package to include other measures designed to boost the nation's sluggish economy. Among them are extending jobless benefits for millions of unemployed workers and continuing tax breaks that were part of President Barack Obama's massive economic recovery package enacted last year. Without action by Congress, unemployment benefits will run out this ...

Deficit Commission Votes 11-7 for Spending Cuts, Tax Changes

Deficit Commission Votes 11-7 for Spending Cuts, Tax Changes

President Obama's bipartisan debt commission voted 11-7 Friday to approve a controversial plan to shave deficits by nearly $4 trillion over the next decade. That fell short of the 14 votes that would formalize its recommendations and send them to the House and Senate floors for an up or down vote. But Democrats and Republicans alike said there is substantial support for much of the plan and that it will lead to a solution to the nation's crushing debt. The package would overhaul the tax code, reducing both tax rates and tax breaks. It would cut back spending on Social Security, Medicare, ...

Right for America or Wrong for Illegals? DREAM Act Takes Center Stage

Right for America or Wrong for Illegals? DREAM Act Takes Center Stage

The most ardent proponents of the DREAM Act know their chances of victory in the next few weeks are slim, but they also know that failure is pretty much inevitable if they wait until next year. Thus we are in the midst of a full-court press on yet another cause that once had substantial bipartisan support, but may not any longer. DREAM, expected to come up for a vote in the year-end lame-duck session of Congress, is catchy shorthand for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors. Translation: The act would offer a path to citizenship – and economic prosperity -- for undocumented ...

Sen. Max Baucus Asks IRS to Investigate Tax-Exempt Groups' Political Spending

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) is calling on the IRS to investigate advocacy groups that he says are taking advantage of their tax-exempt status to push a political agenda. Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, suggested Wednesday that power brokers are working behind the scenes to manipulate third-party organizations for personal and political gain. "Political campaigns and powerful individuals should not be able to use tax-exempt organizations as political pawns to serve their own special interests," Baucus said in a statement. "The tax exemption given to non-profit organizations ...

$250 'Donut Hole' Check Is in the Mail for Seniors' Drugs

$250 'Donut Hole' Check Is in the Mail for Seniors' Drugs

The federal government has begun mailing a check for $250 to every Medicare recipient in the country who reaches the "donut hole" when buying their prescription drugs. The donut hole refers to the price point when basic Medicare stops covering most of a patient's drug costs, but before catastrophic coverage kicks in. This year's one-time payment will cost about $1 billion and was created in the recently passed health care reform bill under Democrats' plan to eventually eliminate the coverage gap for prescription drugs under Medicare Part D. Starting in 2011, the health care reform law says ...
