'Eat a Koala' Campaign Promotes Business, Creates Controversy

Want to succeed in business and real estate development? Eat a koala. That's the message promoted by an angry Australian businessman who contends that local government is more interested in protecting cute marsupials than "saving" business. Queensland local Graham Parker has designed and distributed car stickers encouraging Australians to "Save the Redlands ... Eat a Koala," making reference to his area's wild koala population and struggling businesses. "The stickers I have been making are a protest against the council's single focus on koalas and lack of interest in protecting ...

Fire at California Mall Deals Blow to Region

ROSEVILLE, Calif. (Oct. 22) - A fire that erupted during a police standoff at a suburban Sacramento mall did more than destroy part of a regional shopping hub. It also provided an economic setback to a region of Northern California struggling to emerge from recession. City leaders in Roseville, about 17 miles east of the state capital, pledged to make a speedy recovery after the Roseville Galleria was set ablaze just as the stores were gearing up for the crucial holiday shopping season. Police descended on the mall at midmorning Thursday when a man claiming to have a gun entered the video ...

Mexico Mulls Dissolving City Police Forces

(Aug. 25) -- Few mayors are keen to see their own municipal police forces abolished. But few have faced the violence and corruption Jose Reyes Ferriz has seen as mayor of Ciudad Juarez in Mexico. "City police have names, they have faces," Reyes Ferriz said in an interview with AOL News. "They are very vulnerable to organized crime." That's why Reyes Ferriz, whose border city has the highest murder rate in Mexico, is part of a group of local and state leaders that this week endorsed a fundamental reorganization of Mexico's police forces. The vote of the Special Commission of the National ...
