Lawsuit Questioning Taco Bell's Beef Is Dropped

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - An Alabama-based law firm said Monday it has withdrawn its class-action lawsuit that sought to force Taco Bell to stop calling the meat it serves "beef." The lawsuit, filed in January in federal court in California, alleged that what Taco Bell calls "seasoned beef" is a meat mixture that has binders and extenders and does not meet federal requirements to be labeled beef. The fast-food chain said Monday the lawsuit was voluntarily withdrawn by the firm. It said no money was exchanged and it is not changing any of its products or advertising. "This sets the record straight ...

Five Budget Cuts That Could Be Harmful to Your Health

Hard-fought-for laws and regulations to save lives and the environment will be gutted or eliminated in budget cuts passed by the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives or ordered by President Barack Obama's team, experts say. Public health and environmental experts say it's indisputable that lives will be lost if these cuts are made: 1) The Consumer Product Safety Commission. The commission is scheduled next week to roll out its long-awaited public database on the safety of consumer products. For the first time, it will allow shoppers to quickly determine whether products they ...

Eating 5 Burgers a Week Increases Cancer Risk, British Say

Unless there is something really different between the digestive systems of Yanks and Brits, hamburger lovers on both sides of the Atlantic are about to be told to hold down the number of beef patties they gobble down. It has more to do with reducing your chances of getting cancer than it does with making your love handles smaller. Under new British Department of Health guidelines that are about to be issued, the Scientific Committee on Nutrition has cautioned grown-ups not to eat more than 17.5 ounces of red meat each week. That's a bit more than four Quarter Pounders. They warn that ...

Opinion: Taco Bell Suit Exposes Ignorance About Meat

Shortly after the news about the Taco Bell lawsuit came out, I and my students started to monitor the media coverage about the "beef over beef." What we found was that, while the lawsuit offers American consumers a valuable lesson about what we eat, when it comes to reporting about what the meat really is made of, most journalists aren't exactly being accurate. The lawsuit, for those who haven't been following the case, alleges that Taco Bell was falsely claiming the meat filling used in its tacos and burritos to be beef, since only a small percentage was actually meat. First, it's worth ...

When Taco Bell Tweets

These days, thinking "outside the bun" means mastering the art of social network marketing. Just ask Taco Bell, who find itself waging a campaign to restore its image after a class-action lawsuit was filed against the company over claims that the meat filling used in its menu items contains just 36 percent actual ground beef. As Surge Desk reported on Thursday, the company issued a vehement denial of the charge that its meat was less than beefy. Knowing, however, that perception battles in the modern age aren't won without an aggressive social media campaign, Taco Bell has utilized its ...

Taco Bell Bites Back, Says Its Meat Filling is 88 Percent Real Beef

You don't want to make a Chihuahua mad. Taco Bell is firing back at reports that something is amiss in the meat that fills its tacos and burritos. In a strongly worded statement, Taco Bell's president, Greg Creed, took aim at a class-action lawsuit being filed against the fast-food giant over how much actual ground beef said filling contains. "Our seasoned beef recipe contains 88% quality USDA-inspected beef and 12% seasonings, spices, water and other ingredients that provide taste, texture and moisture," Creed said in a statement posted on the company's website. "The lawyers got their facts ...

In Seattle, King Trumps a President When It Comes to Salmon

In Seattle, King Trumps a President When It Comes to Salmon

SEATTLE -- It took President Barack Obama 6,955 words to share his vision for the future of America. He told us, "This is our generation's Sputnik moment," and spoke of jobs, heroes and the "need to celebrate winners of science fair" and to "reward good teachers and stop making excuses for bad ones." But here at Seattle's Pike Place Market today, among the ice-filled bins holding an array of clear-eyed fish, the chatter among fishmongers and shoppers who saw the State of the Union speech was all about the 34 words Obama uttered halfway through his 71-minute address: "The Interior Department ...

Taco Bell Mystery Meat: Twitter Unleashes

Sink your teeth into this. Fast-food giant Taco Bell finds itself in a bit of a public relations pickle following revelations that the meat it puts in its inexpensive tacos and burritos actually contains just 36 percent actual ground beef. The other 64 percent consists of a combination of water, wheat oats and "isolated oat product." Mini Moos: Miniature Cattle Are Cash Cows for Breeder

Yes, good things often come in small packages. We brought you a lot of animal stories in 2010, but the year ended in a bang on a Colorado farm with the birth of a rare miniature panda cow. The calf, named Ben, arrived at the farm of Chris Jessen, but Ben's father, a 1,000-pound panda bull, was sold to Jessen by Richard Gradwohl, who developed and trademarked the panda cattle breed at his Happy Mountain Miniature Cattle Farm in Washington state. "We're the ones who developed the breed. The reason it's a panda is because it's a composite of eight panda breeds," Gradwohl told AOL News. ...

Germany Halts Sales of Poultry, Pork, Eggs From 4,700 Farms

German authorities halted the sale of meat and eggs from 4,700 farms as concern about tainted animal feed escalates. Test results released today showed that fats used to produce some animal feeds contained more than 77 times the approved amount of dioxin, The Associated Press reported. Dioxin is a chemical substance that can cause cancer and miscarriages, among other health effects. Concern about potentially tainted food products has rapidly escalated. German authorities shut down farms in fives states on Monday and have culled more than 8,000 chickens. Today, South Korea and Slovakia ...
