Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Nov. 12) -- With ACORN now officially out of business, conservative ire has found a new focal point: billionaire George Soros. As the one-man bank behind a plethora of liberal causes, seemingly lefty nonprofits, reviled media outlets like NPR, Democratic candidates and agitating websites like Media Matters, Soros has received an awful lot of attention in the past year, much of it from the commentators at Fox News. In fact, at Fox, Soros' name has replaced ACORN as the new synonym for all that is wrong with the world. The past week alone two rather significant Soros stories have made news: ...
On Wednesday, the story of Ginni Thomas phoning Anita Hill and asking her to apologize was all the rage. One day later, that controversy was overshadowed by news that NPR had fired Juan Williams for comments he made on Fox News. While these back-to-back stories illustrated how fickle the news media are (obsessing over one story until a newer one takes its place), there are also some interesting parallels as well. First, there is the obvious ironic point that each story spotlights an African-American man who was attacked by liberals. What is more, both Thomas and Williams have largely ...
Conservative critics have long accused the liberal activist group Media Matters of being propped up by George Soros. Well, now they're right, at least partly. Soros, a billionaire philanthropist with a history of supporting liberal causes, has donated $1 million to Media Matters, The New York Times reported Wednesday. The group said in a statement that it would use the money to boost its ongoing efforts to fact check the reporting of Fox News, and to hold the network's hosts accountable for their statements. "Fox has transformed itself into a 24-7 G.O.P. attack machine, dividing Americans ...
After weeks of refusals, Fox News has agreed to run a prime-time ad about the $1 million donation its parent company News Corp. gave to the Republican Governors Association. The ad, paid for by Media Matters for America, will run only once, during Tuesday night's Bill O'Reilly's program, The Washington Post reported. The spot points out that News Corp. donated the money to the GOP group "to oppose Democratic candidates for office this November." The donation, which came to light last month, sparked criticism among Democrats that it crossed a line that should separate news operations from ...
(Nov. 12) -- Lou Dobbs, the last of CNN's original anchors, abruptly announced in the middle of his show Wednesday that he's quitting the network. "Over the past six months, it's become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN and to engage in constructive problem-solving," Dobbs said in a statement that gave no indication of where he'll go next but had the ring of a political campaign to it. Embedded video from CNN Video ...
The liberal media watchdog group Media Matters has produced a new ad that targets CNN host Lou Dobbs for his continued flirtation with the "birther" movement. The birthers believe that President Obama is not a legal citizen of the United States. Set to eerie music, the fast-paced spot edits together numerous instances of Dobbs repeating the birther allegations and opens with a voice-over proclaiming: CNN's Lou Dobbs has been promoting the false right-wing conspiracy that President Obama hasn't produced a valid U.S. birth certificate. Watch: In addition, Media Matters has also started a ...
Controversial, Barnum-esque radio host Michael Savage lashed out at fellow right-winger Rush Limbaugh over Rush's failure to come to his defense over his banishment from the UK. HuffPo has the transcript:(audio at Media Matters)SAVAGE: And yet here in America, I've had some people come to my aid. They see the bigger picture. They're not like [Bill] O'Reilly; they're not like Limbaugh, who's the biggest disappointment of all. Limbaugh has turned out to be the biggest phony of all of them, all of them. Amongst all of them, he is the biggest fraud. Rush Limbaugh is a fraud. When he was accused of ...
