Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!WASHINGTON -- International military forces are using words as well as weapons to try to weaken the grip of Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi and urge his troops to turn against him. They are dropping leaflets targeting government troops as well as flying a U.S. propaganda plane that broadcasts to forces of the North African nation, U.S. military officials said Monday. The message: Refuse to obey Gadhafi's orders, stop fighting, go home to your families. Although each day the Pentagon reports the number of bombs it has dropped in the week-old Libya intervention, it has said little about the ...
Hitomi Kamanaka remembers the reaction she got six months ago when she confronted a top official in the city of Fukushima with her fears about the local nuclear power plant. "I told him the reactors were too old, that they were dangerous, and he didn't say a word," said Kamanaka, 52, a filmmaker who has been on a 13-year crusade to educate Japan about the potential hazards of the country's 54 nuclear reactors. "He was silent. He couldn't answer. And I know why. I know the tremendous pressure he was under and how powerless he was." One of Kamanaka's worries that day in Fukushima concerned the ...
NEW YORK -- The New York Times says it's holding out hope that four of its journalists who went missing while covering the Libyan conflict are alive and in the custody of the Libyan government. The four were last in contact with editors on Tuesday from the northern port city of Ajdabiya where they were covering the retreat of rebels. "We are grateful to the Libyan government for their assurance that if our journalists were captured they would be released promptly and unharmed," executive editor Bill Keller said in a statement on Wednesday. He said there were unconfirmed reports that the ...
In this manic age of journalism, what would Lou Grant do? As some may have read in these pages and elsewhere, after two years Politics Daily has lost its lease with AOL and will be vacating this space soon. Some of the newspeople who work here will bring you news from other "verticals" at AOL, and some of them will report from new Web addresses. I'll still be reporting, as I always have, from various other outlets and chasing a new story sooner rather than later. It's in my blood. As a kid, I was obsessed with "Lou Grant," the CBS drama that ran from 1977 to 1982. While other kids loved ...
Charlie Sheen has enchanted America in recent days with his candid discussion of tiger blood, Adonis DNA and why it's a bad idea to pick a fight with a warlock. But not everyone thinks a self-described "bitchin' rock god from Mars" with a history of drug abuse is in the wrong -- or if he is, at least he shouldn't be served up for public consumption by the press. From the Atlantic Wire Now that every single media outlet has seemingly tasted its share of Charlie Sheen exclusives, the cries of "exploitation" are beginning in earnest. Here's a brief overview of those who are -- ...
ANALYSIS Moammar Gadhafi's totalitarian control over the military and media has made Libya's revolution the most violent so far in a region beset by uprisings. Hussein Malla, AP Libyan citizens stand over a destroyed tank at Al-Katiba military base after it fell to anti-regime protesters. Until the protests began, Gadhafi wielded an unmatched amount of control over both the military and communications. The dictator has gone to extreme lengths in an attempt to beat down the protest movement, bringing in mercenaries to slaughter people on the streets and ordering aircraft and boats ...
Now that budget battles have begun in earnest all around the country, those advocating spending cuts, Democrat and Republican, had better not expect any help in furthering their cause from the mainstream news media. In fact, the news media might be their most formidable foe. How so? Well, now that we know the targets of the cuts, the news media, suckers for a sob story, are already throbbing with carefully orchestrated, heart-rending tales about what devastation those cuts will cause: Children who won't be fed; students unable to afford college; classrooms bursting at the seams; cancers that ...
New White House Press Secretary Jay Carney held his first briefing on Wednesday, drawing a standing-room-only crowd who sized up the man replacing Robert Gibbs, President Obama's longtime confidant, adviser and sidekick. Carney, brought into the Obama fold two years ago from Time Magazine, was seasoned as Vice President Joe Biden's spokesman. He did fine on the first day, mainly because he made no mistakes (watch video below). He was measured, affable, serious, and committed little news. He seemed a bit nervous. Carney was adroit in turning aside a hypothetical question about debt, but got ...

The Daily, Rupert Murdoch's long-awaited iPad newspaper, launched today with an event at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
