With Jim Webb Retiring, Is Another 'Macaca Moment' Coming From George Allen? [VIDEOS]

Campaign videographers, stand by. Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., has just announced he will not seek re-election in 2012. In a statement e-mailed to the press today, Webb said he plans to rejoin the private sector. Webb's withdrawal from the contest will improve the chances of his main Republican rival, George Allen, who lost the Senate seat to Webb in 2006. Allen had already announced his intention of running in 2012. The 2006 Virginia Senate campaign became infamous for Allen's so-called "macaca moment," which eroded his lead in the polls. During a campaign stop, Allen noticed S.R. Sidarth, a ...

Colin Powell Clarifies Comments About Illegal Immigrants

Retired Gen. Colin Powell wants to make it clear: He doesn't hire illegal immigrants. The former secretary of state is explaining comments he made Sunday during a wide-ranging interview on NBC's "Meet the Press." Asked about immigration in this country, Powell advocated a path to legal status for those here illegally because they "are doing things we need done in this country." "They're all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house," Powell told host David Gregory. "We've got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness ...

John Boehner: All Your Questions About Would-Be House Speaker Answered

(Sept. 13) -- The House of Representatives is out of session until Tuesday, but House Minority Leader John Boehner has hardly been out of the headlines. On Sunday morning, the Republican from Ohio displayed a change of heart when he appeared on "Meet the Press" and said that given no alternative, he would allow the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy to expire. Though he did so while insisting that passing only middle-class tax cuts would be bad policy, the comment generated widespread reactions from pundits and policy makers alike, with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner stating, "If ...

Mitch McConnell on Obama's Religion: Clearing the Air or Clouding It?

Mitch McConnell on Obama's Religion: Clearing the Air or Clouding It?

When Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Sunday that he would "take the president at his word" that he's a Christian and not a Muslim, it's a safe bet that many Republicans, and others, won't. David Gregory of NBC's "Meet the Press" asked McConnell about the poll out last week from Pew showing that 18 percent of Americans believe Barack Obama is a Muslim, up from 11 percent, and that just one-third of adults say Obama is a Christian, down from 48 percent in 2009. Among Republicans, 34 percent believe the president is a Muslim. And that despite the fact that Obama has been more ...

Adm. Mike Mullen: U.S. Has Plan to Attack Iran if Necessary

Adm. Mike Mullen: U.S. Has Plan to Attack Iran if Necessary

Adm. Mike Mullen said the United States would attack Iran if it became necessary to stop the regime from acquiring nuclear weapons. Asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" whether the Pentagon had a strategy for military action against Tehran, the chairman of the joint chiefs replied, "We do." He did not elaborate. Mullen went on to say that while such a military option is undesirable, the acquisition of nuclear weapons by Iran is simply unacceptable. He said he hoped the West's current approach of imposing increasingly strict sanctions on Tehran would be enough of a deterrent. Striking Iran ...

Steny Hoyer: Democrats will not Lose House

Steny Hoyer: Democrats will not Lose House

WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Tuesday that Democrats will not lose control of the House of Representatives to Republicans as a result of the November elections. "Are there enough seats in play? Probably close," Hoyer said. "The fact that they're in play does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that we will lose the House. I don't think we will lose the House." Hoyer's comments followed remarks Sunday on "Meet the Press" by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who said "there's no doubt there are enough seats in play that could cause Republicans to ...

Rand Paul, Michael Steele: Fighting to Keep the Liberty in Libertarianism

Rand Paul, Michael Steele: Fighting to Keep the Liberty in Libertarianism

It was fascinating to watch the talking heads on weekend round-table discussions try to talk Rand Paul out of the hole he dug for himself. In particular, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele's defense of the Kentucky Senate candidate seemed ambivalent and a bit painful. Paul's trouble came with his musings that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 may have overreached when it forbade private businesses from discriminating, that the federal government's condemnation of BP's oil-drenched transgressions is too harsh and that, when it comes to Gulf spills and fatal mining disasters, ...

Biden Says Cheney Is Misinformed or Misleading

Biden Says Cheney Is Misinformed or Misleading

WASHINGTON (Feb. 14) - Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday belittled Dick Cheney's criticism of the Obama administration's commitment to fighting terrorism as either "misinformed or he is misinforming" and said the Iraq war wasn't worth it because of "the horrible price" paid. The former vice president fired back gently at his successor, saying, "I guess I shouldn't be surprised by my friend Joe Biden." Cheney also said that he disagreed with decisions by Bush officials to place shoe bomber Richard Reid on trial in civilian court and to release terrorism suspects from the U.S. detention ...

While Praising Palin, McCain Calls Her 'Irrelevant'

In the midst of lavishing praise on his former running mate Sunday, Sen. John McCain said Sarah Palin is "irrelevant." In an interview with NBC's David Gregory on "Meet the Press," McCain came to Palin's defense, saying she is "what the Republican Party needs to regain power in the midterms and ultimately in 2012." He also said he continues to have a "wonderful relationship" with her and that he enjoyed her book in spite of the negative things it has to say about his campaign. But while he was handing out high praise, McCain wedged in what could be interpreted as a jab at Palin. "I am ...

Emily's Post: From Gossip Fodder to Gossip Columnist

Having been fodder for every gossip column in town, starting today I'm turning the tables -- and becoming one D.C. gossip columnist who fully gets what it's like to be on the receiving end. Everybody knows Washington politics is not for the meek or thin-skinned. And I've lived, worked and loved D.C. politics and media since I was 18 years old. In the years since, I've toiled on the Hill, at the State Department, in the Bush 43 administration, and for the Washington bureaus of two TV network news divisions. I've also counted chads in the Florida recount, run for my life from the Capitol on ...
