Procrastination Found to Be an Effective Way to Deal With Stress

I was stressed about writing this article, so I took a nap. Then, I played with my kids, made dinner and hung out with my family around the kitchen table. Later, I sat down at the computer, ready to write. Did I procrastinate? Definitely. But according to recent research, avoidance techniques such as sleep, play and spending time with loved ones may be the ticket to less conflict while juggling the various demands of work, family and school. Julie McCarthy, associate professor at the University of Toronto, and Tracy Hecht, an associate professor at Concordia University in Montreal, examined ...

Loophole Means Utah Sex Offender May Go Free

PROVO, Utah -- Prosecutors in Utah are fighting to have a convicted sex offender facing multiple child sex abuse charges committed indefinitely after doctors deemed him no danger to society but mentally incompetent for trial, meaning he could soon see the case against him dropped and be set free. They won at least a temporary reprieve late Wednesday when a judge ordered a civil commitment hearing for Friday for Lonnie Hyrum Johnson, 38. Johnson faces nearly two dozen charges of child sex abuse. He has been held at Utah State Hospital in Provo, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City, since ...

Mental Exam Ordered for Arizona Shooting Suspect

PHOENIX -- A federal judge on Monday ordered the suspect in the January shooting rampage in Tucson to undergo a mental evaluation at a specialized facility in Missouri as soon as possible. The evaluation will be videotaped and provided to prosecutors and defense attorneys, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns said in his late Monday ruling. The judge also ordered that the exam be conducted no later than April 29, and that findings be reported to the court and attorneys on both sides by May 11. Prosecutors had argued that Jared Lee Loughner's exam should be conducted at a so-called medical ...

Charlie Sheen Is Totally Turning Into His Movie Characters [VIDEOS]

They say life imitates art. For Charlie Sheen, that seems increasingly true. Sheen's recent shenanigans -- from the machete to the tiger blood -- have raised lots of questions. Is he on drugs? Suffering from some sort of mental illness? Whatever's going on, Surge Desk has noticed that he seems to be channeling some of his most famous characters. See for yourself. Drug-related philosophizing: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" Sheen's short scene helped make the movie a masterpiece. Here, he waxes philosophical and gives Jennifer Grey some unsolicited advice. (Warning: Language is not suitable for ...

Kaspar the Friendly Robot Helps Autistic Kids

STEVENAGE, England -- Eden Sawczenko used to recoil when other little girls held her hand and turned stiff when they hugged her. This year, the 4-year-old autistic girl began playing with a robot that teaches about emotions and physical contact -- and now she hugs everyone. Alastair Grant, AP Eden Sawczenko reacts to Kaspar the robot's "Happy" stance of two open arms as she takes part in a research project in Hatfield, England. "She's a lot more affectionate with her friends now and will even initiate the embrace," said Claire Sawczenko, Eden's mother. The girl attends a ...

Opinion: The Rush to Diagnose Charlie Sheen

Opinion: The Rush to Diagnose Charlie Sheen

Many articles and blog posts have speculated about Charlie Sheen's recent bizarre behavior, and various possible diagnoses have been mentioned. People want to understand him -- what's wrong with him, why he's behaving this way and what can be done to help him. Although mental health clinicians might seem to be the perfect folks to opine on Sheen's behavior and its root cause, in fact it is unethical for clinicians to diagnose someone from afar, without actually evaluating the person. So I won't attempt to put a diagnostic label on him. But I do think it's worth examining some of the larger ...

Cops: Man Refuses to Pay for Cigarettes Because He's 'the King'

As Mel Brooks famously stated, it's good to be the king. That is, of course, when you really are the king. Police in Michigan say one man learned the hard way that you won't get treated like royalty just because you claim to have regal lineage. Officers in Warren say Joseph Lawrence Borowiak tried to yank a pack of cigarettes away from a 7-Eleven clerk after claiming he didn't need to pay for the smokes because he was "the king," according to MSNBC. ...

Opinion: Not Mental. Not Muslim. Just a Killer

Over a hundred years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt launched a profound concept of social justice by stating: "I shall see to it that every man has a square deal, no more and no less." And now with the release Thursday of a Senate report on Maj. Nidal Hasan and the Fort Hood shooting, and the tragic shootings in Tucson, Ariz., a month ago, it's time to address a deeper question: Why do we label one killer as "mental" and the other a "Muslim"? AP U.S. Maj. Nidal Hasan, left, is accused of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in November 2009; Jared Loughner, right, is accused of ...

Rights Activists Decry Treatment of Imprisoned WikiLeaks Suspect

Amnesty International says that the U.S. military's harsh treatment of the soldier who allegedly passed secrets to WikiLeaks is so inhumane that British officials must intervene. U.K. supporters of Pfc. Bradley Manning argue that while he was born in the United States, he is considered a British citizen "by descent" as well because his mother was born in Wales. Amnesty International called conditions of his detention in a military prison "harsh and punitive" and said they should be improved to conform with international standards, The Guardian reported Tuesday. They have asked British ...
