NYC Mayor Defends Aide's Jab at Palin Mosque Tweet

(July 20) -- New York City Michael Bloomberg says his aide had a right to use Twitter to hit back against Sarah Palin's criticism of a proposed mosque near ground zero. "I will defend her right to speak her mind," the mayor said Monday. The war of tweets began Sunday when Palin called the mosque an "unnecessary provocation" on her Twitter feed. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts," she wrote. "Pls reject it in interest of healing." Steinbrenner Tributes: Honoring a Winner -- or the Ruthless Pursuit of Winning?

Steinbrenner Tributes: Honoring a Winner -- or the Ruthless Pursuit of Winning?

When the media coverage of George Steinbrenner's death began last week, I had to shield my eyes from all the blustery tributes that glorified the contentious "lion" who changed the game of baseball forever. The Yankees are my team, and New York is my city. My heart surges with pride when we win. I am reliably grumpy when we don't. If happiness is rooting for a sports team that occasionally doesn't disappoint you, George Steinbrenner has contributed undeniably to my personal satisfaction. But he doesn't merit this posthumous adulation, which continued over the weekend with coverage of ...

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

Several trends point to the beginning of the end of car culture in the United States. But are Americans seriously ready to embrace alternatives to automobiles? It's been a bad few years for cars in America. First, there was the auto industry bailout to the tune of $110 billion. Then, two of the three big carmakers -- GM and Chrysler -- went through bankruptcy. Finally, just when we thought that the future lay in turning Japanese, even the beloved Prius went off the road (literally) and Toyota has recalled nearly 9 million of its vehicles in the last few months. ...

Voters, Especially Independents, Sour on Obama and Congress

Voters, Especially Independents, Sour on Obama and Congress

Voters are in a sour mood both about President Obama and Congress, with a plurality disapproving of Obama's job performance and a significant percentage saying that if the 2010 elections were held today they would vote for a new candidate rather than their current representative, according to a Marist Institute poll conducted Feb 1-3. That mood is most pronounced among independents. Forty-seven percent disapprove of the job Obama is doing while 44 percent approve, with 9 percent undecided. Independents disapprove by 57 percent to 29 percent, with 14 percent undecided. While Obama himself is ...

It's N.Y. vs. Obama Over 9/11 Trial (And Sir, You Should Just Give Up Now)

It's N.Y. vs. Obama Over 9/11 Trial (And Sir, You Should Just Give Up Now)

Maybe the president can ridicule his fellow Democrats (hey, don't run to the hills) and maybe he can scorn a Supreme Court decision while the justices are seated in their robes a few feet from his podium, and maybe he can threaten and scold Republicans as negative nabobs and naysaying obstructionists -- all of which he did during his State of the Union address. But he cannot push New York City around. The administration's idea was to stage the trial of the self-described mastermind of 9/11 at the U.S. District Court in Lower Manhattan, the historic seat of city government. The White House ...

Despite Bad Economy, Crime Rates Plummet

By  David Knowles - AOL News
Despite Bad Economy, Crime Rates Plummet

(Dec. 24) – Looking for some good news in a year full of economic woe? Crime was down in 2009. Way down. According to figures released this week by the FBI, the overall crime rate dropped by 4.4 percent this year. Property crime dropped by 6.1 percent and homicides were down an eye-popping 10 percent. In fact, crime rates have fallen to levels not seen since the 1960s. It may seem counterintuitive that at the same time a recession has forced more people to live on less, crimes such as car theft and burglary are down markedly in comparison with a year ago – down 19 percent and ...

Lawmaker Apologizes for Kidnapping Remark

Lawmaker Apologizes for Kidnapping Remark

(Nov. 18) -- Rep. John Shadegg isn't backing off his charge that holding 9/11 trials in New York would put the city at greater risk, but he says he's sorry he dragged the mayor's daughter into the argument. In remarks on the House floor Monday night, the Arizona Republican blasted Attorney General Eric Holder's decision to move admitted 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four of his cohorts from Guantanamo Bay to New York, where they will be tried in civilian court. He scoffed at Mayor Michael Bloomberg's assurances that the city can handle any possible security problem. "Well mayor, ...

New Yorkers Resigned to Supporting Bloomberg for Mayor

New Yorkers Resigned to Supporting Bloomberg for Mayor

Michael Bloomberg may be the only mayoral candidate it makes any sense for New Yorkers to vote for, but they're not doing it without grumbling, the Washington Post reports. Bloomberg leads his primary opponent, the hardly known and under-funded Democrat Bill Thomson, by double digits in the polls, prompting "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart to joke that is is "running unopposed." But even among his supporters, voters are queasy about the sums he has spent to remain in office -- $250 million over three campaigns, the most of any American politician in history -- and his abrupt change of the law to ...

Parsing the Tuesday Election Returns -- at Your Own Peril

Parsing the Tuesday Election Returns -- at Your Own Peril

Beware of the dreaded Only-Game-in-Town Syndrome. Next Tuesday night -- as actual statewide election returns flash across TV screens for the first time since Barack Obama's election -- political junkies will face a nearly irresistible temptation to divine cosmic patterns from the gyrating digits. Amid this frenzied rush to election night judgment, it seems almost futile to play the killjoy and shout, "But the wheel is crooked." ...

Ain't it Rich: Bloomberg's Costly Coast to a 3rd Term

NEW YORK – Standing in front of a statue of liberal patron saint Eleanor Roosevelt on Manhattan's Upper West Side, Mike Bloomberg fielded a reporter's question about his crusade against obesity. New York's two-term mayor – who recently even banned fund-raising bake sales in the schools – described his activist philosophy as he strives to create a city that never sleeps, but also never noshes on anything sinful. "This is America," Bloomberg declared in the nasal tone that launched a thousand re-election commercials. "You have a right to eat what you want to eat. And it's the ...
