Everyone is used to the familiar "horse race" poll that tells us who is out front when it comes to a campaign, but Quinnipiac University has a different measure for some of today's leading political personalities: namely, who ranks the "warmest" and "coldest" on a "feelings thermometer"? The winner when it comes to warmest? First lady Michelle Obama, with former President Bill Clinton close behind. The coldest? Sarah Palin and Nancy Pelosi. (Actually, Harry Reid ranks right in between them, but more later on why his result doesn't count as much). The way Quinnipiac did this poll, which was ...
For the second successive year, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas won the presidential straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, capturing 30 percent of the vote. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts was second in the straw poll with 23 percent of the vote, Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio announced at the conference in Washington held by the American Conservative Union. The others on the ballot finished far behind. Related Stories CPAC, Day 2: Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Ron Paul and More Haley Barbour to Host Blogger Happy Hour ...
About seven in 10 Americans, and an even larger percentage of Republicans, believe it is important that GOP leaders consider ideas put forward by the tea party movement, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Jan. 14-16. The poll comes as the traditional leadership of the party must adjust to an infusion of tea party-endorsed lawmakers who want to be even more aggressive than some Republicans on issues such as cutting spending and the size of government. They have also started eying Republicans such as Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar, whom they want to force from office in 2012. Tea party ...
As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, President Barack Obama will deliver his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress today. Surge Desk has a live feed of the proceedings, which will be followed by an official response delivered by Republican Rep. Paul Ryan, and an unofficial tea party rejoinder given by Rep. Michele Bachmann. Coverage of the speech begins at 8 p.m. EST, and the president is scheduled to begin speaking approximately an hour later. State of the Union responses are typically doomed to obscurity, or worse. At best, they are unremembered. At worse, they can backfire on the deliverer. (Who can forget Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's response -- which may have derailed a possible 2012 presidential bid.) As such, one wonders about the wisdom of assigning the role to another conservative "rising star" -- the boyish and wonkish House Budget Committee Chair, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). After all, no matter who gives a response, the speaker faces huge structural challenges: The deliverer must compete with the pageantry and spectacle ...
I'm sure Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., meant well when he told CNN's Candy Crowley that when it comes to correlating the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and nearly 20 others with the recent violent rhetoric of certain political factions and figures, "I don't think you can ever make the direct connection." We have done so before, though. In the 1990s, it was commonplace for politicians of both parties to chastise rappers like Ice-T and rockers like Marilyn Manson for the violent imagery and lyrical content that politicians felt they promoted and link them to the violent acts of ...
Look out Sarah Palin -- there's a new Republican woman who's eyeing an Oval Office run in 2012. Michele Bachmann, a three-term congresswoman from Minnesota, is known as much for her conservative views (homosexuality is a "dysfunction" and President Barack Obama is turning America into a "nation of slaves") as for the enmity she arouses in liberals. As ABC News reports, Bachmann, the founder and chairwoman of the House Tea Party Caucus, will travel to Iowa this month "to seek advice from political forces there and party elders close to the caucus process before coming to a final decision" on ...
The national debt has risen by $1 trillion since June, reaching a new high of more than $14 trillion, the U.S. Treasury reported on its website Monday. The new high was reached on Friday. To be precise, the amount of money the government owes is $14,025,215,218,708.52, according to the Treasury website. And that figure is growing ever closer to the debt limit of $14.294 trillion set by Congress. If Congress does not vote to raise the debt limit, the U.S. government could be in danger of shutting down or defaulting on its obligations. But passing an increase in the limit may be difficult, ...
Based on the angry e-mails and Tweets I received during the campaign, it was clear some of my conservative friends didn't understand why I was so bullish on the candidacy of Marco Rubio yet slightly less enamored by the candidacy of Christine O'Donnell. The reasons, of course, transcend political philosophy (both appear to be solid conservatives). The difference has to do with intellectual firepower, communication skills, and -- maybe most important -- having the right temperament to advance conservatism in the 21st century. In observing history, it becomes clear that the most effective ...
