Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! It's the month of March, time for Dana Milbank's month of silence about Sarah Palin to end, and the Palin family is helping him by getting back in the news. First, there's Bristol Palin's upcoming book. Then, there's Daily Caller Editor Tucker Carlson's snide tweet about Bristol's mom, the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate, that's generating plenty of heat among conservative women and Palin supporters. We'll go with the controversy first. Sometime last night, Carlson tweeted this: "Palin's popularity falling in Iowa, but maintains lead to become supreme commander ...
Rep. Paul Ryan gave the official Republican response to the State of the Union address Tuesday night, taking the opportunity to criticize the Obama administration's efforts on health care reform and economic policy. Surge Desk turned to Twitter to see what people thought about the Wisconsin congressman's speech. Some people noticed Ryan's camera-friendly features. .bbpBox30323324085084160 {background:url(http://a0.twimg.com/profile_background_images/111633020/Twitter_Flowers2.jpg) #07090b;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px ...
Wednesday night's Tucson memorial service featured an address from President Barack Obama, remarks from Arizona officials and a capacity crowd. It also had a name: "Together We Thrive: Tucson and America." Today, some conservatives, including blogger Michelle Malkin, are criticizing the president for "branding" the memorial service with the phrase, which was printed on signs and T-shirts that were given to attendees. As is so often the case, many of these critics turned to Twitter to express themselves. Some waxed sarcastic: .bbpBox25626252194877440 ...
As night follows day, the terrible tragedy in Arizona that involved the near fatal shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., unleashed a flood of partisan attacks. Many on the left quickly tried to use the Tucson massacre -- which left six dead -- as an opportunity to attack heated political rhetoric on the right. Those on the right countered that no connection had been made between conservative talk and the actions of the accused shooter, Jared Loughner, adding that the left has hardly been blameless when it comes to violent political imagery. (Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin ...
In the wake of the deadly shooting in Tucson, Ariz., over the weekend, many Americans are questioning whether the horrific crime was influenced by what seems to be an upsurge in violent political rhetoric and imagery. While the tone of American political discourse has arguably become more bombastic with the polarization found on partisan blogs and cable television networks, one person's actions have drawn special scrutiny: Sarah Palin. Specifically, Palin's now famous use of a map (see it here), in which she placed crosshair icons over the districts of those who supported President Barack ...
(Oct. 27) -- As another election draws near, it's worth asking: Which is the larger problem in America, voter fraud or voter intimidation? On Tuesday, 47 people in Minnesota were charged with voter fraud stemming from the 2008 general election, Minnesota Public Radio reported. That location is significant, as conservative activists have long alleged that Sen. Al Franken was only elected because of voter fraud. Unfortunately for the groups trying to prove that Norm Coleman was the real winner of the contest, initial claims that some 1,250 people had acted to throw the election Franken's way ...
(Oct. 20) -- Let's get one thing straight right away: The Boston Tea Party took place on Dec. 16, 1773. Opposing pundits across the blogosphere have been bickering over comments made by Sarah Palin at a rally on Monday in Reno, Nev. Palin told a crowd of tea party supporters that they shouldn't "party like it's 1773" because there is still much work to be done between now and the November elections. The 1773 party that Palin was referring to is, of course, the Boston Tea Party. Here is the video of Palin speaking: Palin's history is clearly accurate in this case. Unfortunately, the Boston ...
(Aug. 18) -- On Tuesday night, conservative radio advice guru Laura Schlessinger announced she's quitting radio after 30 years on the air. Schlessinger's departure follows a controversial on-air exchange she had with a black woman on her show. During the episode, the woman explained to Schlessinger that her husband is white and his relatives frequently use hurtful racial language around her, including the "N-word." In response, Schlessinger said "Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic and all you hear is n*****, n*****, n*****." Schlessinger also told her that ...
(June 28) -- West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd wasn't even gone yet when posters on right-wing websites were dancing on his grave. At Andrew Breitbart's site, the nastiness was sickening. Among them (reprinted verbatim): Hasta la vista KKK Birdman. Funny how old D-rats are falling like flies this year. (Yes that WAS an insensitive statement. Deal with it!) oh ya let me say something *nice* about the Kleagle: . ooops - "Grand Kleagel" sorry will the kkk march in his funeral procession? and will they be before or after the naacp representatives? and will his headstone monument be smaller, ...
On Monday and Tuesday, President Obama convened a historic gathering in Washington to deal with the most urgent threat facing the globe: nuclear terrorism. Never before have so many world leaders gathered to discuss together how to thwart one of the greatest nightmares imaginable; 47 nations were represented. Though no sweeping treaties or agreements were reached, Obama did succeed on two important fronts. He placed the issue of controlling and securing nuclear material that could be used by terrorists (including al-Qaeda and its allies) at the top of the global to-do list. And he encouraged ...
