WASHINGTON -- Michelle and Barack Obama welcomed a mix of Hollywood A-listers, big business types and prominent Chinese-Americans to the White House as they threw a "quintessentially American" state dinner Wednesday for the president of China, complete with apple pie and ice cream, and jazz music for the entertainment. The first lady was clad in an elegant red shoulder-baring gown that swished around her in soft folds and the president sported a tuxedo as they welcomed Chinese President Hu Jintao on a red carpet on the White House portico. An honor guard stood at attention behind them. ...
Who wants a piece of the Chinese action? The White House today released a list of U.S. corporate leaders who have been invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday with Chinese President Hu Jintao this week. The aim of the meeting is to pave the way for future exports for American companies. "You'll see important commercial relationships that our CEOs have and want to expand in China that the president believes is important to make a forceful case in front of both the CEOs from China as well as President Hu," Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters today. So who made President Barack ...
Chat rooms are getting a little more real. With the new "Avatar Kinect," Microsoft says it will be able to use its camera to scan in a user's body and then put it in a virtual room with other people's avatars that will be able to talk, gesture and even raise their eyebrows, just like the real people controlling them. But forget about really close encounters of the virtual kind. Microsoft stresses that player avatars will be confined to their chairs and that the lower body -- all of it -- will remain immobile. "Avatar Kinect captures facial expressions, voice and upper body movement only," ...

(Nov. 4) -- Kinect, Microsoft's new "controller-less" XBox 360 motion sensor launched last night, and the company spared no expense at making sure the world sat up and paid attention. Yes, even you, notoriously laid-back gamers. The software giant took over Times Square to promote their product, with dozens of demo stations, a giant stage with what MTV estimated at 100 dancers, and good old "Marky Mark" Wahlberg. The message they were sending was clear: This is a thing you really need to care about, and not just because it's designed to blow away the Nintendo Wii's now 4-year-old motion ...
(Nov. 4) -- In an interview with gaming blog Kotaku today, Microsoft director of Kinect technology Alex Kipman assuaged fears that the Kinect's web camera and microphone could be used to spy on consumers gather personal information, causing all the unsuspecting gamers who hadn't yet considered that potential shortfall to startle. "Whoa! Microsoft could use the Kinect's Internet-connected camera and microphone to spy on consumers and gather personal information?" Software giant and noted monopolist Microsoft is no stranger to conspiracy theories, but the Xbox always seemed more a part of their ...
(Oct. 1) -- Claiming it put the "smart" in smart phones, Microsoft announced today that it's filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Motorola over features incorporated into the popular Droid line of phones. Specifically, Microsoft alleges that Motorola infringed on nine of the software giant's patents for Android system phones. In a press release, Microsoft detailed the features it believes Motorola improperly incorporated into its phones. (Sept 14) -- Like thousands of other gamers across the country, I was in line last night to be one of the first to get my copy of "Halo: Reach," the latest in the Halo franchise -- arguably the most important video game involving guns since "Duck Hunt." But when I arrived, I discovered I was hardly one of the first to get to the store. In fact, the first to line up at my local GameStop store arrived nearly 14 hours before me. Joe Peacock for AOL News As the line grows outside the Hampton, Ga., GameStop on Monday night for the midnight release of "Halo: Reach," one fan blows off a little ...
