Michigan Official Who Targeted Gay Student Fired

(Nov. 9) -- Citing "harassing conduct," the office of Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox fired Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell on Monday. The now-former assistant attorney general had recently taken a professional leave of absence due to criticism surrounding his anti-gay blog, which targeted University of Michigan Student Assembly President Chris Armstrong. Shirvell's actions -- he referred to Armstrong as "Satan's representative on the student council" and allegedly stalked the 21-year-old outside his home -- became both an issue of defending gay rights as well as Shirvell ...

Andrew Shirvell Takes Leave of Office After Chris Armstrong Attack Blog

(Oct. 1) -- Andrew Shirvell, the Michigan assistant attorney general who decided to pick a fight with the University of Michigan's first openly gay student body president Chris Armstrong by launching a (formerly) anonymous, personal attack blog, has taken personal leave from his position as of Thursday, according to The Detroit News. Shirvell, whose "Chris Armstrong Watch" blog also closed to the public on Thursday (but is still available via the glorious Google Cache), generated national criticism and notoriety this week. Among the more inflammatory posts on the blog were accusations that ...

Andrew Shirvell Defends Formerly Anonymous Chris Armstrong Attack Blog

(Sept. 29) -- Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell has a strange obsession. After his alma mater, the University of Michigan, elected its first gay student body president, Chris Armstrong, Shirvell launched an anonymous blog to attack Armstrong. On it he calls Armstrong a "Nazi" and "Satan's representative on the student council." Perhaps even more surprising, Shirvell's boss, Attorney General Mike Cox, scolded his employee but hasn't fired him. "All state employees have a right to free speech outside working hours," Cox said in a statement. "But Mr. Shirvell's immaturity ...

Political Newcomer Wins GOP Nod for Mich. Governor

WASHINGTON (Aug. 3) -- In a surprise primary outcome, political newcomer Rick Snyder dispatched Michigan's attorney general, a longtime congressman and two others Tuesday to win the Republican nomination in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero grabbed the Democratic nod, but the GOP candidate automatically became the favorite in the economically ailing state. Michigan has the nation's second-highest unemployment rate - at 13.2 percent - and scores of foreclosures, and that has been a drag on the two-term Democratic governor. With less ...

Races in Michigan and Kansas Launch a Busy Primary Season

The August primary season begins in earnest Tuesday with the focus on Republican voters in Michigan, who will choose their candidate for governor, and in Kansas, where two long-serving congressmen are competing for the seat of GOP Sen. Sam Brownback, long a leading conservative. Both the crowded Michigan race and the Kansas contest between Reps. Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran, are close, according to the latest polls. It is also primary day in Missouri, but there isn't much question that the namesakes of two of the state's longstanding political families -- Democrat Robin Carnahan and ...

Michigan Governor's Race: 'Undecideds' Rule Democrats, Tight Contest for GOP

Democrats in Michigan will choose their candidate for governor in two weeks and while House Speaker Andy Dillon has the lead, the largest number of voters in a Detroit News/WDIV poll conducted July 12-13 are those who are undecided. On the Republican side, three candidates are bunched together as the August 3 primary approaches. Dillon runs ahead of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero by 34.3 percent to 25.1 percent with 39.5 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4.9 points. Republicans Have the Edge Going into Michigan Governor Race

While the crowded primary races for the Republican and Demnocratic gubernatorial nominations in Michigan have yet to sort themselves out, match-ups among the candidates of both parties point to a GOP advantage going into the general election, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted May 25-27. Political newcomer Rick Snyder, the former chief of Gateway computers, Rep. Pete Hoesktra and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard all lead the two top Democrats Democrats vying for their party's nod -- state House Speaker Andy Dillon and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero. The match-ups with two ...

Republicans Have Big Edge Going into Michigan Governor Race

Any of the three leading Republican contenders in Michigan's gubernatorial race are running ahead of the two top Democratic hopefuls by significant margins in the race to succeed Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm who is term-limited, according to an EPIC/MRA poll conducted March 28-31. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the match-ups is former Gateway computer chief executive Rick Snyder, a political newcomer, who gained some political fame when he launched his "One Tough Nerd" TV ad during the Superbowl. Snyder's margins over the two Democrats are 12 and 16 points compared to 7 and 13 points ...

Hoekstra and 'Some Other Candidate' Lead GOP, Dem Primary Fields in Michigan

A third of Michigan Republicans and more than half of the state's Democrats are undecided about who they want their nominees for governor to be. But among those who have made a choice, Rep. Peter Hoekstra leads on the GOP side and "some other candidate" leads the three Democrats who were tested in a Rasmussen Reports poll March 24. Hoekstra polls 24 percent to former Gateway computer chief executive Rick Snyder's 18 percent. Attorney General Mike Cox gets 13 percent, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard comes in at 6 percent, 5 percent prefer some other candidate and 32 percent are undecided. ...
