For the War's Wounded Troops and Families, Elmo Can Help

How can you gently explain to a 4-year-old that Daddy has been killed in Afghanistan and will never come home? How does a combat-wounded Marine convince his scared young son that he's still the same loving Dad, even though his thighs now end in stumps? ...

War Casualties and the Emptiness Left Behind

War Casualties and the Emptiness Left Behind

The first reply to my post "On Memorial Day, Remember the Mothers, Children, Wives and Lovers Too" was from a high school teacher. She remembered Sgt. Ronald Kubik, one of the soldiers featured in the story. She had him in her English class. A month ago Kubik died in Afghanistan. His teacher wrote: It seems like yesterday that I taught him, but in reality, 7 years have passed since the last day of his freshman year. Ron's passing has really hit me hard. I might not have seen him in over 4 years (he always stopped by to visit even after he moved and graduated) but I am still having ...

Opinion: Time Doesn't Fly for Military Spouses

(May 31) -- "Time sure does fly." Someone recently said that to me after I explained that my husband is a couple of months away from coming home from his deployment to Afghanistan. It's funny; I've determined that saying doesn't apply to military families of deployed soldiers. A couple of months still feels like an eternity. Courtesy Georgie Hanlin The author's husband is shown here in Afghanistan. This July, my husband will return from his yearlong combat deployment with the 1-17 Infantry. Or at least I'm counting on his return. Nothing, of course, is guaranteed in war. His unit is no ...

Unending War: 'When We Win, We Can Relax'

Unending War: 'When We Win, We Can Relax'

FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Wearied and worn by eight continuous years of war, the 37,000 soldiers and family members of the 10th Mountain Division here await with stoic resignation the decision President Obama will soon announce on sending more troops to Afghanistan. So far, they have found the strength to weather a seemingly unending wartime cycle that has sent soldiers away for a year of combat, brought them home for a year of intense training, and sent them back into war for another year. If the president calls, they will salute and pack up once again, of course. But the signs of strain are ...

Obama Administration to Allow Photographs of War Dead

By  Mark Impomeni - Politics Daily
Obama Administration to Allow Photographs of War Dead

The Pentagon said today that it will lift the ban on media photographers covering the repatriation ceremonies for American war dead at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. President Barack Obama had asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates to review the policy, which was first put in place prior to the first Gulf War in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush, earlier this month. Supporters of the ban say that media coverage of the solemn ceremonies only serves to politicize American war casualties, while opponents argue that the lack of media coverage hides the true cost of the war from the public. Most ...
