Disabled Man Banned From Driving Wheelchair Tank

Disabled Man Banned From Driving Wheelchair Tank

This could be a real case of tanks for nothin'. British authorities have told a disabled man he cannot use his wheelchair on public streets because he requires a tank license to drive it. Jim Starr, 36, has been banned from using his custom-made wheelchair by Britain's Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency, which claims it is actually a tank. "The whole idea of the chair was that I could go down to the beach with the kids," said Starr. "It is a fantastic machine and can take me anywhere I want to go. It has no limits. "It is ridiculous that I should have found a chair that could help me do ...

Nothing Sniffs Out Roadside Bombs Like a Dog's Nose

Nothing Sniffs Out Roadside Bombs Like a Dog's Nose

In the war on roadside bombs, the Pentagon has spent billions on everything from radio-signal jammers to robots, but there's one tool that's beaten them all -- dogs. Now, instead of trying to come up with a technology that's better than dogs, Navy scientists are focusing on how to make the bomb-sniffing dogs work better. Futuristic Railgun Weapon Sets US Navy Record [VIDEO]

Futuristic Railgun Weapon Sets US Navy Record [VIDEO]

(Dec. 10) -- This is not a video game. The U.S. Navy shattered its record for firing velocity today when it demonstrated the force of the electromagnetic railgun during at test exhibition in Dahlgren, Va. The futuristic weapon fired at a phenomenal 33-megajoules, more than tripling the Navy's previous record set in 2008. What on earth is a railgun, you might ask? Firing at more than two to three times the velocity of a conventional weapon, the railgun employs an electromagnetic current to "accelerate a nonexplosive bullet at several times the speed of sound." Shots fired by the weapon can ...

Gates Calls Out Dangerous Gaps in US Defense Exports

(April 20) -- In the fight to keep sensitive government technologies and equipment out of the wrong hands, the Obama administration plans a radical overhaul of a Cold War-era system more alert to the likes of Soviet spies than modern terrorists. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, discussing a review ordered by President Barack Obama last summer, said the current Defense Department and Commerce Department systems for licensing the export of such technologies are so deeply flawed, in fact, that they pose a national security threat. Susan Walsh, AP Defense Secretary Robert Gates discusses a review ...

The Iraq War: Suddenly, It's Not So Bad After All

The Iraq War: Suddenly, It's Not So Bad After All

That sound you hear is of Conventional Wisdom cracking on the Iraq war. A few weeks ago Vice President Biden stated that Iraq "could be one of the great achievements of this administration." (That's right; one of the greatest achievements of the Obama administration.) Then last week came the much-commented upon Newsweek cover story, which declared that "something that looks mighty like democracy is emerging in Iraq. And while it may not be a beacon of inspiration to the region, it most certainly is a watershed event that could come to represent a whole new era in the history of the massively ...

Russian Aircraft Purchase Draws Congressional Ire

Russian Aircraft Purchase Draws Congressional Ire

(Jan. 7) – In December 2007, the Pentagon gave a no-bid contract worth more than $300 million to ARINC, a Maryland company, to buy 22 Russian helicopters that were urgently needed for Iraq's nascent military. Two years later, even after all of the money has been paid out, none of the helicopters have been delivered, the costs have increased and it's unclear when, if ever, the helicopters will be delivered. Now, the Pentagon's quiet purchase of nearly a billion dollars worth of Russian helicopters for Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan is drawing fire from Congress. Democrats and Republicans ...
