Opinion: A Blumenthal Apology We'd Really Like to See

(May 24) -- Late Sunday, Connecticut's Democratic Senate candidate, Richard Blumenthal, apologized for misrepresenting his military service. In a statement e-mailed to the Hartford Courant, Blumenthal said, "I truly regret offending anyone" by unintentionally saying he served "in" Vietnam when he meant "during" Vietnam. After One Tough Job, War Veterans Face Another: Finding Employment

When Tom Tarantino left military service at age 29, he thought he'd have an easy time transitioning into civilian work. "I assumed I'd have a job in two or three months," he said. "That's what they tell us in the Army." It's not hard to understand why he was so confident. Tarantino had 10 years of service and several promotions, leaving the Army as a captain in 2007. He had been a platoon leader in Iraq for a year, heading more than 500 mortar missions, investigating local militia leaders and conducting counterinsurgency operations.
