Opinion: While World Looks Away, Iran Cracks Down

While the world focuses its attention on the unrest in Libya, and on other Middle Eastern countries trying to throw off tyrannical leaders, Iran is seizing the opportunity to increase repression of its political dissidents. On Monday, Iranian opposition websites confirmed that security forces have arrested two 2009 presidential candidates who are the nominal leaders of the dissident Green Movement -- Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi -- along with their wives. The couples had been prisoners in their homes for weeks, but even house arrest was not enough to assuage the Iranian government's ...

Iran Warns Opposition Rally May Turn Violent

TEHRAN, Iran -- In an apparent attempt to discourage protesters, an Iranian pro-government news agency claimed on Sunday that armed opposition groups plan to fire on people participating in a rally set for Sunday afternoon. The report from the hardline Fars news agency said that teams from the Mujahedeen Khalq, an Iraq-based Iranian opposition group, have entered the country to shoot people during the protest. Iran's opposition has called for a rally Sunday to mark a week since the deaths of two people in Feb. 14 clashes between security forces and opposition protesters in Tehran. The ...

Iranian Demonstrators Call for Execution of Opposition Leaders

Thousands of supporters of the Iranian regime took part in demonstrations across the country today, demanding the execution of the country's two main opposition leaders, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi. The two ex-presidential candidates were placed under house arrest earlier this week after being accused of organizing Monday's anti-government protest in Tehran. Two men were killed during that demonstration -- the first sizable protest held in the city for months -- and protesters are now planning a second protest on Sunday. During a prayer sermon in Tehran today, influential cleric ...

Iran Opposition Leader Ready to 'Pay Any Price'

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's opposition leaders remained defiant Wednesday despite calls from hard-liners for them to be brought to trial and put to death, with one reform advocate saying he was willing to "pay any price" in pursuit of democratic change. Iran's beleaguered opposition brought tens of thousands of its supporters into the streets on Monday, ostensibly to display solidarity with Egypt's anti-government protest movement. It was also a chance for the opposition to put on its first significant show of strength in more than a year, and it set off clashes with police that killed two people ...

Amid Clashes, Iranian Lawmakers Want Opposition Put to Death

TEHRAN, Iran -- Hardline Iranian lawmakers called on Tuesday for the country's opposition leaders to face trial and be put to death, a day after clashes between opposition protesters and security forces left two people dead and dozens injured. Tens of thousands of people turned out for the opposition rally Monday in solidarity with Egypt's popular revolt that toppled President Hosni Mubarak after nearly 30 years in power. Is Protest Fever Spreading in the Middle East?

In December, a young man named Mohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire, sparking nonstop protests that eventually resulted in the removal of Tunisia's authoritarian president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Last week, Egypt's Hosni Mubarak finally gave into nearly three weeks of demands for his ouster, leaving the military to manage a transition to democracy. From the Atlantic Wire Certainly there may be limits to how far protest-fever will spread. But right now the Middle East is getting a good dose of demonstrations, as some of the smallest and most repressed nations start to ...

Iran Protesters Dig In Despite Arrests [VIDEO]

During the Cold War, the U.S. worried that communism could be contagious. Now it's looking like the government in Iran is worried that democracy could go viral. After Hosni Mubarak was forced from power, Iran's opposition planned a rally today to celebrate Egypt. But according to The Associated Press, the Iranian government has instituted a "massive security crackdown," including placing police and militia members on the streets, even cutting the phone lines of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, another opposition leader, were both placed under house arrest ...
