Hard Census Count Helps New Orleans Move Forward

Hard Census Count Helps New Orleans Move Forward

The changes to New Orleans became visible almost as soon as the floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina receded in 2005, but having a real count today from the release of 2010 census data will enable the city's leaders to know what's actually going on in the post-Katrina world for the first time. New Orleans lost 140,845 residents in the past decade, new census data shows. The city's population now stands at 343,829, down 29 percent from 484,647 residents counted in the 2000 census. The city has lost 54,188 children, a drop of 47 percent. That means that the Crescent City is smaller by almost a ...

Census: Don't Blame Katrina for Louisiana's Loss of Clout

Census: Don't Blame Katrina for Louisiana's Loss of Clout

WASHINGTON -- Conventional wisdom holds that Hurricane Katrina's destructive powers have cost Louisiana one of its seven seats in Congress in the new census because thousands of people were forced to relocate. But it turns out that Katrina may not be to blame after all. Greg Rigamer, a demographer and president of GCR & Associates, a New Orleans consulting firm, said the state's growth was so sluggish in the past decade that it was on track to lose a seat in the House of Representatives and one of its nine electoral votes anyway. Between 2000 and 2005, the nation's population grew at a rate ...

The Families Who Could Decide New Orleans' Fate

The Families Who Could Decide New Orleans' Fate

NEW ORLEANS (Aug. 29) -- Michael Canedo remembers clearly the day his neighbors gathered at the local playground and vowed to rebuild. It was two months after Hurricane Katrina. The days were still warm. Ten feet of flood had turned Burbank Gardens, a neighborhood of tidy shotgun homes and "camelback" duplexes, into a dead zone. Everything below the water line was coated in moldering gray mud. All living creatures seemed to have vanished, even the bugs. The playground itself stood barren and flat, stripped of all but three magnificent live oaks. Despite the bleakness, the group seemed ...

New Orleans Rising: Katrina's Wrath, a City's Resilience

New Orleans Rising: Katrina's Wrath, a City's Resilience

NEW ORLEANS -- Sunday marks the fifth year since Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast. The next day saw the failure of a federally managed levee system (by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers), which caused 80 percent of New Orleans to go underwater. This weekend the city is filled with events that recall the epic destruction and aching diaspora, while promoting the persona of a city reborn. The national media has descended in force. Of the many network specials,"Witness: Katrina," which airs Monday night on National Geographic Channel, is a superb visual narrative drawn from video shot by ...

Scandal-Ridden New Orleans Police at Crossroads

Scandal-Ridden New Orleans Police at Crossroads

(July 16) -- In New Orleans, a town known for its jambalaya, jazz and hospitality, it hasn't been difficult over the years to find folks willing to serve up some harsh words about their often-maligned and scandal-plagued police department. That may change -- even with the latest federal indictments for the shootings after Hurricane Katrina. The Big Easy has a new mayor, Mitch Landrieu. The Justice Department -- at his request -- has stepped in to examine signs of systemic police misconduct. And a new police chief, Ronal Serpas, has been installed. The department is at a crossroads. And the ...

Drew Brees, Mitch Landrieu, and the Pre-Lenten Gift NOLA Gave Itself

As long as there is music in the French Quarter, they will talk about the onside kick that started the New Orleans Super Bowl comeback, Drew Brees' pinpoint passing, and the electric moment when Louisiana native Tracy Porter picked off an errant Peyton Manning pass and took the ball 74 yards for a touchdown that clinched the Saints' Super Bowl victory and ended 42 years worth of frustration for the Saints faithful. It was a Super Sunday, all right, and the town was jammed with happy fans who rejoined from the Domilise's Po-Boys in Uptown -- the Manning family's favorite restaurant -- to the ...
