Space Fashion Beams Down to Brazil

Space Fashion Beams Down to Brazil

It may be 2011, but at Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Brazil this past weekend, it looked more like the year 2111 with a flock of futuristic fashions hitting the runway. One of the spaciest high-fashion ensembles on the catwalk came from Brazilian fashion house Amapo, owned by eclectic young designers Carolina Gold and Pitty Taliani. A pale, slightly disheveled model strutted her stuff wearing a dress covered in metallic 3-D prisms that appeared to have been made from some sort of shiny and sturdy cardboard material. ...

Report: Marrow Registry Spent Thousands on Sexy Recruiters

(Dec. 17) -- A bone marrow campaign went all out to make potential donors an offer they couldn't resist by spending $60,000 a week to hire models in short skirts and heels to ask people to sign up for the lifesaving registry, investigators say. But what the Massachusetts registry didn't tell unsuspecting do-gooders is that its costly operation was billing insurance companies up to $4,300 for each DNA swab. Most labs charge about $100. "They just came up to me and were like, 'Do you want to save a child's life?' And you can't say no thank you," Samantha Pushee, who signed up for the registry ...

Australia Pressures Fashion Industry to Bulk Up Models

(June 29) -- Australia has launched a campaign to rid its catwalks and fashion magazines of ultrathin models. The skinny from Down Under is that the country's youth health minister, Kate Ellis, is urging the fashion industry to put healthier, fuller-bodied and more diverse women front and center. "Body image is an issue that we must take seriously because it is affecting the health and happiness of substantial sections of our community," Ellis said, according to The Sunday Telegraph in Australia. Christina Hendricks: Full-Figured Never Looked Better

Clothes look good on thin bodies. But thin bodies naked? Not so much. Naked full bodies is another matter. Or near-naked, a la actress Christina Hendricks in a corset on the cover of New York Magazine. Hendricks, a breakout star of AMC's hit show "Mad Men," is undeniably beautiful. She's also a different body type than we're used to seeing in the glamor factories of Los Angeles and New York. But then "Mad Men" is a period drama, set half a century ago. It may be relevant that most fashion designers are gay men. Thin women look more male than their voluptuous counterparts in the general ...

Photoshop 'Til You Drop

Photoshop 'Til You Drop

The world of haute couture has always been one of make-believe, fantasy, outrageousness and the fantabulous. If high fashion were ordinary, who would buy it? But even give those wide parameters, in its never-ending struggle to be more, better and different, haute couture has exploited high tech graphic design to a level many find troubling. Photoshop and other digital programs, while trying to scale new heights of outrageousness are pushing the reputation of fashion photography to new depths of depravity. And these digital remakes seem positively unnecessary, coming as they do at a time of ...

Ralph Lauren Model Fired for Being Too Fat?

Model Filippa Hamilton accused Ralph Lauren's clothing company of firing her because she is too fat, the New York Daily News reports. Hamilton is 5 feet 10 inches tall and 120 pounds. In recent days, the fashion house has been forced to apologize for an advertisement in Japan for Ralph Lauren Blue Label -- seen at left -- in which Hamilton's body was Photoshopped so extremely that her head was bigger than her hips.
