Safes, Cash Wash Up on Japan Shores After Tsunami

OFUNATO, Japan - There are no cars inside the parking garage at Ofunato police headquarters. Instead, hundreds of dented metal safes, swept out of homes and businesses by last month's tsunami, crowd the long rectangular building. Any one could hold someone's life savings. Safes are washing up along the tsunami-battered coast, and police are trying to find their owners - a unique problem in a country where many people, especially the elderly, still stash their cash at home. By one estimate, some $350 billion worth of yen doesn't circulate. ...

Cops: Man Bought Printer From Walmart to Make Fake Money

For many shoppers, a trip to Walmart can be a way to save money. But for Douglas Brian Osborne, it was allegedly a way to make money -- using a printer to counterfeit $600 in funny money. Investigators in Gainesville, Fla., say Osborne purchased a printer from the Lake City megastore on March 10 and promptly attempted to pass off the bogus bucks before being busted later that day, The Gainesville Sun reports. The 30-year-old suspect allegedly tried to spend this fabricated fortune at Stubbies & Stein's restaurant. But an employee apparently refused to accept the questionable cash, so ...

A Colorado man accused of causing $250,000 worth of damage to his neighbor's property over an $80 debt may now have to pay a debt to society. Pop Stars, Lobbyists Turn Away From Gadhafi's 'Dirty Money'

The name Moammar Gadhafi has become so poisonous that everyone from singer Nelly Furtado and the London School of Economics to high-powered PR firms and lobbyists are trying to erase past dealings with him. Furtado said she plans to give away to charity the $1 million she earned for performing in private for the Gadhafi family in 2007. There are increasing calls for Beyonce, Usher, Mariah Carey and 50 Cent, all of whom reportedly performed for high fees for Gadhafi's relatives, to take a stand as well, the BBC reported. Public relations firms and lobbyists who have collected eye-popping fees ...

WikiLeaks: Gadhafi Stashed $32 Billion in Cash in Foreign Accounts

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has signed dozens of multibillion-dollar deals over the past decade with foreign firms eager to exploit his country's vast oil and natural gas reserves. So where has all that money gone? Not to ordinary Libyans, around one-third of whom are thought to live in poverty. Instead, Gadhafi and his family appear to have been quietly siphoning off the country's riches and investing them abroad. According to a confidential cable penned last year by the U.S. ambassador to Libya, the regime's secretive sovereign wealth fund (an investment vehicle for Gadhafi and his ...

Microsoft VP Thinks Money-Scented Perfume Can Make You Stinking Rich

A Chicago man has dreams of being stinking rich -- and thinks a line of fragrances with the smell of money is just the ticket for combining dollars with scents. Patrick McCarthy, a vice president of sales at Microsoft, took a break from his day job to create His Money Cologne and Her Money Eau de Parfum, a line of his-and-hers fragrances that are designed to make the wearer smell like a million bucks -- or more, depending on how much you put on. It's the first time he's attempted a fragrance, but he's certain the idea will be successful enough to fatten his bank account -- and the ones of ...

Bradley Manning Gets $15,000 From WikiLeaks for Legal Defense

Who has Bradley Manning's back? Manning, an Army intelligence officer, remains in a Quantico, Va., maximum-security facility while he awaits trial on charges that he passed on a mountain of classified U.S. government material to WikiLeaks. Now WikiLeaks has donated $15,000 to help pay Manning's legal fees. Other groups and individuals from around the world have also made donations to support Manning's defense, building a fund that's just $15,000 shy of the $115,000 his supporters say they'll need. The fundraising effort (and the money) is being managed by the Bradley Manning Support ...

Study: Youths Crave Self-Esteem More Than Sex

Young people crave boosts to their self-esteem more than sex, money -- even late-night pizza. That's according to new research by social scientists at Ohio State University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, who surveyed the cravings and motivations of more than 280 college students in two separate projects. They found that the students rated compliments -- like getting praise for doing well on a test -- higher than the rewards of money, sex, eating their favorite food or spending time with friends. "It wouldn't be correct to say that the study participants were addicted to self-esteem," ...
