Should BYU Have Cut Brandon Davies for Reportedly Having Premarital Sex? [POLL]

Should BYU Have Cut Brandon Davies for Reportedly Having Premarital Sex? [POLL]

Brandon Davies, the basketball star from Brigham Young University, is used to being in the spotlight. But usually it's because of his moves on the court, not off. Davies was suspended from the Cougars basketball team for at least the rest of the season after he reportedly violated the BYU honor code by having premarital sex. In addition to forbidding premarital sex, BYU's students are also not allowed to drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages. (See the BYU honor code rules.) The honor code is meant to keep BYU students living by the precepts of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day ...

Brandon Davies, an Honor Code Violation and the BYU Cougars' Future

Brandon Davies, an Honor Code Violation and the BYU Cougars' Future

Usually, a college student having sex wouldn't make headlines. But Brandon Davies isn't just any college student. He's a superstar on the Brigham Young University basketball team -- which is currently ranked No. 3 -- and is therefore bound by the Mormon school's strict honor code. And in addition to mandating that students "[a]bstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse" and "[u]se clean language," BYU students are expected to "live a chaste life." That means getting down before exchanging vows is strictly verboten. So Davies, a center, is off of BYU's team for ...

Is Glenn Beck Attempting to Fulfill the Mormon 'White Horse Prophecy'?

Is Glenn Beck Attempting to Fulfill the Mormon 'White Horse Prophecy'?

(Oct. 5) -- Is a prophecy known to few outside of the Mormon faith motivating Glenn Beck's crusade against President Barack Obama's administration? That's Washington reporter Dana Milbank's conclusion. In an article published Tuesday at The Huffington Post, Milbank details the history of Joseph Smith's so-called "White Horse Prophecy." Though two of Smith's followers are said to have heard him deliver the prophecy in 1843, it was not actually written down until the 1850s, when the men were elderly and Smith had passed away. In 1855, Smith's successor, Brigham Young, distilled the prophecy ...

Is Glenn Beck the Next Billy Graham? For a Few. (Maybe Too Few?)

Is Glenn Beck the Next Billy Graham? For a Few. (Maybe Too Few?)

After Fox News host Glenn Beck led his spirit-filled "Restoring Honor" revival on the Mall last month, he seemed to be reinventing himself as an American Moses delivering America back to the Promised Land -- or perhaps the next Billy Graham, as Southern Baptist leader Richard Land suggested. Yet a new poll shows that Beck isn't quite yet a figure of biblical proportions, with 17 percent of Americans believing Beck "is the right person to lead a religious movement" and 50 percent saying he's not. Even among Republicans and white evangelicals, a highly motivated cohort of conservative voters ...

Tired? Blow Up Your Inflatable Pillow Tie and Take a Nap

Tired? Blow Up Your Inflatable Pillow Tie and Take a Nap

(Sept. 16) -- As fashion goes, neckties may be the least-utilitarian clothing item ever invented, save for perhaps the codpiece. However, two guys in Utah have managed to do the impossible: make the necktie actually functional. To do that, they had to make it inflatable, and now sales are blowing up for their Pillow Ties. Solent News / Rex / Rex USA A Utah company has created the "Pillow Tie," an inflatable tie designed for comfort while sleeping through boring business meetings. The Pillow Tie is an invention of Tom Bowen, a former business student at Brigham Young University in ...

Glenn Beck's Attacks Prompt White House Defense of Obama's Faith

Glenn Beck's Attacks Prompt White House Defense of Obama's Faith

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs Thursday pushed back against Fox News host and religious revivalist Glenn Beck by asserting that President Obama is "a committed, mainstream Christian." The White House has been flummoxed in recent weeks by surveys showing that a growing number of Americans believe that Obama is a Muslim and not a Christian -- one in five express that belief, according to a recent Pew survey. A Newsweek poll this week showed that a majority of Republicans believe Obama "sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the ...

Shooting Leaves Mormon Official, Suspect Dead

VISALIA, Calif. (Aug. 30) -- Police are searching for motives behind the actions of a gunman accused of fatally shooting a Mormon church official before dying in a shootout with police. Clay Sannar, 42, a lay bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was doing administrative paperwork on Sunday between church services when a man came into the Visalia church and asked for a leader of the church, said church official Ralph Jordan. After being directed to Sannar, the attacker shot and killed him, said Visalia police chief Colleen Mestas. Visalia is southeast of Fresno, in ...

Warren Jeffs to Get New Trial

Warren Jeffs to Get New Trial

(July 27) -- Polygamist Mormon leader Warren Jeffs will have yet another day in court. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah's Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Judge James Shumate improperly instructed the jury that convicted Jeffs in 2007 of being an accomplice to two counts of first-degree felony rape. In 2001, Jeffs helped marry Allen G. Steed to a 14-year-old girl, Elissa Wall. At the trial, Wall testified that she objected to the marriage and to sex with Steed. Jeffs' lawyers had argued that the judge should instruct the jury that Steed, not Jeffs, was responsible for any ...

Joel Osteen: Mitt's a Real Christian

By  Tommy Christopher - Politics Daily
Joel Osteen: Mitt's a Real Christian

In an interview with Fox News' Chris Wallace, popular televangelist Joel Osteen gave Mitt Romney an endorsement of sorts, addressing the doctrinal issues that many had hoped would be addressed in Romney's "Faith in America" speech. WALLACE: And what about Mitt Romney? And I've got to ask you the question, because it is a question whether it should be or not in this campaign, is a Mormon a true Christian? OSTEEN: Well, in my mind they are. Mitt Romney has said that he believes in Christ as his savior, and that's what I believe, so, you know, I'm not the one to judge the little details of it. ...
