Close Encounters of the Sacred Kind

Close Encounters of the Sacred Kind

(Oct. 1) -- A group of people has a mass sighting of a huge, airborne glowing object that follows them for many miles and even protects them from attack. Someone is seen being lifted into the sky on a beam of light. A man witnesses unexplained circular vehicles with living creatures on board. Pretty much sounds like your typical, modern-day UFO sightings, right? Wrong. These are vivid accounts of stories from the Old and New Testaments. "If UFOs are some type of intelligent power from another world, they may have been around for millions of years and may have been involved in the development ...

Holy Moses! Science May Explain Parting of Waters

(Sept. 22) -- The parting of the Red Sea (or Reed Sea, depending on how the ancient Hebrew is translated) is one of the Old Testament's most spectacular episodes. After being led out of Egyptian slavery by Moses, the Israelites find themselves trapped: before them lies a seemingly impassable body of water, while behind them the pharaoh's army is fast approaching. Moses appeals to Jehovah for help, and God obligingly blasts a "strong east wind all night" into the sea, creating a path to freedom for the Israelites and, when the wind subsides, a watery grave for the Egyptians. Rescuers Dig 'Moses' the Camel Out of Sinkhole

OREGON CITY, Ore. (Sept. 15) - It was an unusual call for Oregon firefighters: A 1,500-pound camel, named Moses, needed to be rescued. The call came in Tuesday night in Clackamas County after the Oregon City owners of the camel called firefighters to say that Moses had fallen into a sinkhole 6 to 8 feet deep and was possibly injured. The owners - who have several camels and run a children's ministry - had tried to get the camel out themselves but failed. Firefighters had to carefully shovel mud for several hours to free the animal. The rescuers were concerned Moses would break his legs if ...

Tiger Woods' Sex Scandal: The Video Game

(April 23) -- Tiger Woods' sex scandal may have tarnished his image, but it has made a new video game based on his off-the-course life a lot more exciting. Woods is now the star of "Tiger Woods Affair Tour 2010," a raunchy, sexually explicit video game that its creators describe as a mix of "Grand Theft Auto" and "South Park." Courtesy D-Dub Software D-Dub Software has just released "Tiger Woods Affair Tour 2010," an unauthorized and sexually explicit video game that lets players walk in Woods' golf shoes as he has sex with as many women as possible. Characterized as interactive parody, ...

Get On Down, Moses: The Exodus and American History

Get On Down, Moses: The Exodus and American History

Review of Bruce Feiler, America's Prophet: Moses and the American Story (New York: William Morrow, 2009). 368 pages. $26.99. Bruce Feiler must have had a great many unused notes on Moses lying around after he finished his best-selling "Walking the Bible: A Journey By Land through the Five Books of Moses." I honestly can think of no other reason for his coming out with "America's Prophet: Moses and the American Story," which resembles nothing so much as a heavily padded term paper -- padded with dialogue and narrative, that is, not with documentation -- by a student whose teacher taught him the ...

FanHouse Top Five: Bill Walsh's True Accomplishments; Kevin Garnett Mania

FanHouse's Top Five scans the sports blogosphere for the best posts of the last 24 hours so you don't have to. Got something for this feature? Hit us up at fanhouse@googlegroups.com.1) Yesterday was quite a day for us headline-hungry sports fanatics: not only did Kevin Garnett finally, finally get traded -- and to Boston! -- the sports world lost a true mastermind in Bill Walsh. Walsh's accomplishments (the West Coast offense; a coaching lineage to rival Moses's) are well know, but EDSBS remembered to mention one of Walsh's greatest additions to the football fan canon: College Football ...
