Investigators claim Angelo J. Palmieri walked into a Cumberland Farms store in St. Cloud at around 4 a.m. Wednesday and demanded cash while indicating he was carrying a weapon, the Orlando Sentinel reports. ...
When a shower of bullets started spraying her house Sunday night, Chanelle Johnson's mothering instincts kicked in. She threw herself on top of her three children, all younger than 6. Another mother in the house similarly protected two more children. Johnson's house was one of three hit when two carloads of unidentified shooters let more than 40 bullets fly in the Thonotosassa section of Hillsborough County, which sits about midway down Florida's Gulf Coast. "You've got to protect your babies," Johnson told WFTS-TV. She was so shaken after the incident, she wouldn't show her face to the ...
My friend Julie Levine had everything I lacked: A charmed childhood, beautiful kids. I might have envied her had she not been the nicest person I ever met. And, therefore, a magnet for cancer. (On an Internet bulletin board I once frequented, we joked that compassion and a zest for living were risk factors.) Julie is eight years younger than me, so I assumed she would someday speak at my funeral. Especially once I received a diagnosis of stage III ovarian cancer in 2001. Julie came to my hospital room. She took me to chemo. She and her mother came to my house bearing brisket, fudgy peanut ...
The governor of Ohio has received 165,000 petition signatures asking him to pardon Kelley Williams-Bolar, the woman who spent 10 days in jail for fraudulently enrolling her children in a more desirable school district. Three nonprofit groups -- ColorofChange.org, Change.org and MomsRising.org -- delivered the petition to Gov. John Kasich's office Monday, according to The Columbus Dispatch. The groups want Kasich to pardon Williams-Bolar, 40, whose felony convictions could disqualify her from becoming a school teacher. Akron Beacon Journal / MCT Summit County ...
How far would you go to get your children into a better public school? The best intentions of one Ohio woman landed her in jail. In a highly unusual case, Kelley Williams-Bolar, a single mother who lived in Akron public housing, was convicted of lying about her residency in order to send her two daughters to a highly ranked school. Her sentence, which inflamed emotions in the community, was 10 days in jail, according to reports, and is due to end this week. "It's overwhelming. I'm exhausted," she told ABC News. "I did this for them, so there it is. I did this for them." Four years ago, ...
Now here's a first. Minnesota parents Amy Zeller and Codjo Mensah knew they were going to welcome one special baby into the world when they went to a St. Paul hospital Monday night -- but they no idea their daughter Flora would be born at 1:11 a.m. on 1/11/11. Zeller told MyFoxTwinCities.com that numerology wasn't the first thing on her mind when she checked into United Hospital, even though her niece had been urging her to "hold her until midnight." But when the clock struck 1 a.m., Zeller said, doctors and nurses in the delivery room started focusing on that one magic ...
The 10-year-old boy being held in Ohio on charges of fatally shooting his mother is unlikely to stay in prison past his 21st birthday if he is convicted. "It will stay in juvenile court," Holmes County Prosecutor Steven Knowling told AOL News. "Under our law in Ohio, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to bind a 10-year-old over as an adult. It is not something that is customarily done." Knowling said that "under normal situations" the boy would be subject to juvenile court incarceration with the state youth commission until he is 21, "but there are some situations where it could ...
The Roman Catholic Bishop of Phoenix has stripped St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center of its 115-year church affiliation because administrators -- including a nun -- allowed doctors to remove a dying 11-week-old fetus from a mother of four because she would have died without the procedure. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted said the procedure was an abortion, which can never be justified under church teaching. He added that because the hospital would not agree to demands to acknowledge the error and operate under his direct supervision it could no longer use the "Catholic" label or have Mass ...
(Dec. 16) -- There's nothing like a mother's voice. New research from the University of Montreal shows that a newborn's brain responds differently to its mother's voice than to the voices of others. The mother's voice can spark activity in the parts of the brain responsible for learning language. When the child hears others speak, the reactions can be very different. "This is exciting research that proves for the first time that the newborn's brain responds strongly to the mother's voice and shows, scientifically speaking, that the mother's voice is special to babies," said lead researcher ...
(Oct. 6) -- Police in Colorado Springs, Colo., are investigating the suspicious deaths of a woman and her 13-year-old twins in an attempt to determine whether the case is a murder-suicide or a homicide. "We are not in the position to rule anything out at this point," Colorado Springs police Sgt. Steve Noblitt told AOL News. The investigation into the case was launched late Monday afternoon, after 43-year-old Tommy Ogden returned home from work to discover his wife, 38-year-old Rene Ogden, dead inside their home. Authorities arrived on the scene and discovered the bodies of the twins, Chase ...
